It's Almost the Finals (5/16)

By Faith

Here we go guys -- three left! Oh, and left the ass-licking of Clive begin.

Clive picks Open Arms for Elliot. Well that was a non-event.

Katherine -- I Believe I Can Fly -- ugh, I'm not looking foward to this. OK, it's not so bad as I imagined, but I still hate her.

And for Taylor, Clive picks Dancing In The Dark -- this should be good if he's on his game. Good for Taylor, light fun, appealing.

Paula chooses What You Won't Do For Love for Elliot. Must confess I don't think I know this one, but here goes. Ok, I do know this song. He's really good, but seriously there's no spark for me with him -- I really want to like him, really I do, but I just can't find that connection.

Simon picks Somewhere Over the Rainbow for Katherine?!?!?! Are you fucking kidding me? Ugh -- I hate to say it was so good, but it was. Still, I can't like her.

Randy's pick for Taylor -- You Are So Beautiful -- OK Taylor, this is what I've been waiting all season to hear from you -- please do it! Yes yes yes yes - that was finally it.

Last of the night. Elliot picks Ray Charles, I Believe To My Soul. Again, s'ok, wish I could connect with him more. I have a feeling he's going this week.

Katherine picks I Ain't Got Nothin But The Blues -- another obscure pick. And not all that good.

And finally, Taylor sings. Try A Little Tenderness. Yes. Yes. This has to be good. Yes, he so nailed this.

Journey? For Elliott? Interesting.

Posted by: Ian S. at May 16, 2006 08:04 PM

Owww. Severely flat on the chorus.

Posted by: Ian S. at May 16, 2006 08:06 PM

Not the Journey song I would have picked. It's not too bad though. Give it a mheh plus.

Posted by: Chris at May 16, 2006 08:06 PM

Every time they mention Clive, I think of Clive Anderson from the Brit version of "Whose Line Is It Anyway".

Anyway, Elliott was decent on this one.

(Oh, good evening, everybody!)

Posted by: Jaquandor at May 16, 2006 08:07 PM

"I Believe I Can Fly"? Oh *no*.

Posted by: Ian S. at May 16, 2006 08:12 PM

I just can't stand her. Ick.

Hi y'all!

Posted by: Tammy at May 16, 2006 08:13 PM

Did she just forget the lyrics?

Posted by: Ian S. at May 16, 2006 08:14 PM

Katherine: "I Believe I Can Fly"?! God in Heaven, I hate this song. Let's see how she does....

Well, I give it a 60 on the meh-o-meter, with five bonus points for shiny breasts. Hard to judge, really, because I'd probably hate this song if Frank Sinatra in his prime sang it.

Posted by: Jaquandor at May 16, 2006 08:14 PM

After wiping the drool off the mouth... Song was ok, nothing special. Well, actually didn't like it at all. But dang she is purdy...

Posted by: Chris at May 16, 2006 08:14 PM

it's official, you look great on the first 2 judges means: You sucked.

Posted by: Chris at May 16, 2006 08:15 PM

The "moment" she created was in Simon's pants and had nothing to do with the singing.

Posted by: Ian S. at May 16, 2006 08:16 PM

Hey, everybody.

Elliott was just okay on "Open Arms."

You gotta respect Clive Davis' song choices, but "I Believe I Can Fly" = schmaltz out the wazoo for Katharine. Ick. The performance was alright...hopefully Taylor will rock the house.

Posted by: Samit at May 16, 2006 08:16 PM

Actually, I typed that before she got the end where the arrangement got really weird and brassy like they went all 70s variety show or something. Deduct five points for that, so with the Shiny Breast Bonus, she breaks even with 60 on the meh-o-meter.

(She has a good point, though, in pointing out that she didn't choose the song. Randy kind of sputtered there.)

Posted by: Jaquandor at May 16, 2006 08:16 PM

Springsteen? Already a yick. Please do good Taylor.

Posted by: Chris at May 16, 2006 08:17 PM

"Dancing in the Dark"? That could work really well for him.

Posted by: Ian S. at May 16, 2006 08:17 PM

The winner so far. I hate this song and he's making it tolerable.

Posted by: Chris at May 16, 2006 08:19 PM

-20 for dancing with Paula, but I'm really liking the vocal - the song fits his voice *perfectly*.

Posted by: Ian S. at May 16, 2006 08:19 PM

Taylor: Loved it. Let's move on.

Posted by: Jaquandor at May 16, 2006 08:19 PM

Springsteen on Taylor? Ooh, intriguing.

I thought it was a good performance vocally, and he even got Paula up on the "catwalk". Best so far, but none of the three have been anything spectacular.

Posted by: Samit at May 16, 2006 08:20 PM

Definitely the best so far, but we've got 6 songs to go.

Posted by: Ian S. at May 16, 2006 08:22 PM

LLLLEEEEEETTTSSSS GET RRRRREADY TO RUMMMMBBBLLLEEE!

Ok: 1st up: Elliott with BAD song choice! AI commandment #4: Thou shalt not start the show with a ballad. I know Clive stuck him with it, but Randy played bass with Journey and will be super critical. Too bad. No movement, no runs. Pitchy too.

NEXT!!!

Kat sings R. Kelly - another ballad (suprise) I believe I can fly - breaks another AI commandment (#6): Thou shalt not sing a song performed too many times in auditions. VERY flat at times - too runny - missed high note. NOT GOOD.
Simon sucked up to Clive when Randy ppointed out she broke Commandment #6.

NEXT!!

It’s our man singin’ Springsteen (for the 1st time on AI) Dancing in the Dark: NAILED IT!!! YEAH BABY!!! WHOOOOOOOOO! Soul Patrol!!!! And he pulled Paula outa the audience (ala the video that made COurtney Cox a career) BAMMMM! (no suprise, really)

It’s OVAH!!!! Round 1 goes to Taylor. Soul Patrol!!

Posted by: Chuckles at May 16, 2006 08:22 PM

Chuckles: you got a complete list of those commandments? =)

Posted by: Ian S. at May 16, 2006 08:23 PM

ok, this is a good song choice for Elliot. A hanging curve for him. He's doing real well with it.

Posted by: Chris at May 16, 2006 08:27 PM

I have a newfound respect for Paula - this song is *perfect* for Elliott, and he's nailing it.

Posted by: Ian S. at May 16, 2006 08:27 PM

Did Paula just get impatient with the sound of her own voice?

Anyway, that was a pretty solid "meh". With very few exceptions, Elliott just never seems to make an impression with me.

Posted by: Jaquandor at May 16, 2006 08:28 PM

I agree Ian. that was fantastic. perfect for him. He helped himself this time.

Posted by: Chris at May 16, 2006 08:28 PM

Over the Rainbow, perfect for her. Let's see if she can nail it.

Posted by: Chris at May 16, 2006 08:29 PM

This sure is a weird-ass arrangement of "Somewhere Over The Rainbow"...it better get interesting quickly.

Posted by: Samit at May 16, 2006 08:30 PM

She better send a big thank you to Simon for this. This is much better than the first song. Well done.

Posted by: Chris at May 16, 2006 08:31 PM

Katherine: This arrangement blows, and I hate the way this song has become a damn cliche. And no Shiny Breast Bonus this time. 40 on the meh-o-meter.

(And enough with the tight closeups on her, for fuck's sake!)

Posted by: Jaquandor at May 16, 2006 08:32 PM

Simon Cowell: 1
Clive Davis: 0

Great choice by a judge once again, and I'm really liking the vocal - it's very "personal" for lack of a better term. I'm getting actual goosebumps.

Posted by: Ian S. at May 16, 2006 08:32 PM

We have a fight on tonight. It's going to be interesting when the votes come in.

Posted by: Chris at May 16, 2006 08:33 PM

Yes, I do have a list of the AI commandments - and I will gladly post it later! :-)

Posted by: Chuckles at May 16, 2006 08:35 PM

Well, the performance actually turned out pretty great. I gotta say, though...I'm not digging the whole kneeling-on-the-floor thing. Still — it was a fantastic vocal.

Posted by: Samit at May 16, 2006 08:35 PM

All the F*#k's remind me to ask: Anyone know what happened to Beth? She hasn't been here in a couple weeks.

Posted by: Chris at May 16, 2006 08:37 PM

So Beautiful. Talk about a hanging curve. This ones going out of the park.

Posted by: Chris at May 16, 2006 08:38 PM

Joe Cocker should be perfect for Taylor.

Posted by: Samit at May 16, 2006 08:38 PM

His singing is great, but he looks like he's going to puke. What's up with that?

Posted by: Chris at May 16, 2006 08:39 PM

Judges: 3
Clive Davis: 1

Fantastic choice for Taylor, and *what* a great performance!

Posted by: Ian S. at May 16, 2006 08:40 PM

Round 2:

Elliott - Better! Still average.

Kat - ZZZZzzzz - massive judge suckup.

Taylor - Wow. Nailed it.

Round 2 to Taylor.

Posted by: Chuckles at May 16, 2006 08:41 PM

That was good, but not as good as I would have expected.

Got to give round 2 to Kat.

1 round to Taylor, 1 to Kat. Elliot trying to catch up.

Posted by: Chris at May 16, 2006 08:42 PM

Taylor doing a Cocker tune? I'm shocked! Shocked!

He's singing this beautifully -- that falsetto was terrific -- but the pace of this arrangement couldn't possibly be slower, could it?

Posted by: Jaquandor at May 16, 2006 08:43 PM

Hicks is #1 so far, as long as he does not have a "funky white boy moment" (which I did like by the way, I just don't think he can afford to screw around this wee) he should be have no problem making the finals.

Posted by: Todd at May 16, 2006 08:44 PM

This is great so far. Elliott's showing more of his charismatic side, which he really needs to do.

Posted by: Samit at May 16, 2006 08:47 PM

Honestly, what kind of music can Elliot sing that will sell albums? Good voice, but I do not see a market for him.

Posted by: Todd at May 16, 2006 08:48 PM

Elliott up one last time: I always feel like I should like him more than I do. I dunno. I can't say there was anything specifically bad about it, but it just makes me shrug and say, "OK. Next!"

Posted by: Jaquandor at May 16, 2006 08:48 PM

That's Elliott's best vocal of the night, and possibly of the season.

Posted by: Ian S. at May 16, 2006 08:48 PM

His voice cracked towards the end there, and I don't know that the song was enough to send him into the next round.

Posted by: Samit at May 16, 2006 08:48 PM

Heh. Simon setting him up to go down. Cute.

Posted by: Ian S. at May 16, 2006 08:49 PM

Todd, Clive will get a good album out of him. Elliot's biggest problem is no charisma which is a must for a performer.

Posted by: Chris at May 16, 2006 08:49 PM

Elliot was good, but still behind the others.

Posted by: Chris at May 16, 2006 08:50 PM

I see Katharine is breaking out what I call her "hooker boots". I must admit that this is quite a sultry performance from her so far.

Posted by: Samit at May 16, 2006 08:51 PM

Chris, I emailed Beth. She was live blogging at Sondra K's earlier...
http://www.sondrak.com/index.php/weblog/the_ai_thread/

Posted by: Tammy at May 16, 2006 08:51 PM

Too... much... drool... to ... type...

Posted by: Chris at May 16, 2006 08:51 PM

Katherine 3.0. Ten points deducted just for that entrance.

I didn't like that. It was all over the place, it felt like an unconvincing acting job, just ick.

I did not enjoy her tonight...and yet she'll probably make it through.

Posted by: Jaquandor at May 16, 2006 08:52 PM

Thanks Tammy. I guess I'll razz her later for dumping us.

As for Kat. Dang she's hot. But I have to put her behind Elliot in round 3.

Posted by: Chris at May 16, 2006 08:53 PM

I liked that performance better than the judges did - hitting the falsetto properly was quite impressive, although she somewhat "stuck the landing" returning to her normal voice.

Posted by: Ian S. at May 16, 2006 08:53 PM

Taylor's final round: He's chosen to show off his voice this week, which is the smartest thing anyone's done this year.

When this thing started, I honestly didn't see him lasting beyond, say, the final six -- I figured he was this year's George Huff -- but right now, I can't see either Katherine or Elliott beating him next week.

Posted by: Jaquandor at May 16, 2006 08:57 PM

Three words: Taylor is God.

Posted by: Samit at May 16, 2006 08:58 PM

Round three:

Elliott makes Ray Charles fans break the mute button on the remote by pressing it WAY too hard. And he broke Commandment # 9: Thou shalt not sing a song in another AI contestant's genre. Buh bye Elliott!

Kat sings an OLD ballad, and also tries to borrow Taylor mojo (Commandment 9 again): stripper song!!! Stripper boots! McTata's are out! She's workin it folks...
She's in the finals. My ears still hurt though. I now have nuthin but the blues.
Judges said she sucked.

Last up in the Pimp Spot: Taylor with an 'in your face' moment to Nigel and friends: the song judged not to be a great love song. A song when performed by Taylor in rehersal that was said to be appropriate for 'Blues Brothers' week, not Andrea's week. Is there any doubt what would happen?

THUD!!!

A KNOCKOUT in the 3rd round. The winnah!!! Taylor.

Posted by: Chuckles at May 16, 2006 08:58 PM

Nice finish for him. Round 3 to Taylor.

Posted by: Chris at May 16, 2006 08:58 PM

Taylor wins. Fatality.

Posted by: Ian S. at May 16, 2006 08:59 PM

Order of the night.

1. Taylor
2. Kat
3. Elliot.

However, I predict that since Kat has been on the bubble so much, that Elliot will survive and send Kat home.

And, on the record, which ever is left between Kat and Elliot will get the #3's votes and beat Taylor. Sorry.

Posted by: Chris at May 16, 2006 09:01 PM

have a good night everyone!

Posted by: Chris at May 16, 2006 09:03 PM

Taylor and Elliott *should* be the final two, but I think the producers want a boy and a girl.

Posted by: Ian S. at May 16, 2006 09:03 PM

...trying to vote for Taylor now and having no luck even with redial. Dang =)

Posted by: Ian S. at May 16, 2006 09:04 PM

well, Ian, at least it's not just me.

Posted by: Tammy at May 16, 2006 09:12 PM

BTW: The local Ritchmond, VA phone provider set up special phone banks that will call from other areas north & west of Richmond to allow E-Train folks to avoid phone blockage.

Also: you can't use online texting to register a vote: you must use the phone or it doesn't count.

Remember SOul Patrollers: use the 5709 number to call so the DialIdol folks can maximise their software! They didn't anticipate the 3 numbers move.

Posted by: Chuckles at May 16, 2006 09:20 PM

I have mostly been lurking during this AI season, usually laughing at the very acerbic entries (thank you Faith, Chris, Ian S., Tammy and Jaquandor [my husband likes the shiny breasts, too) but I finally feel like I need to get this off my chest (ha ha): I just hate what seems like forced naivete by Kat, much like Kelli Pickles. Ugh! And Kat's dad last night was so pissed at the judges dissing her. Ugh! Yeah, she's cute, her Rainbow song was great, but puh-leeze, make her go home tonight! She's making me sick I tell ya.

Thank you for listening.

Posted by: Katie at May 17, 2006 05:16 PM

Err, no thread for the results show? :)

Posted by: Ian S. at May 17, 2006 09:45 PM

I guess not. If Kat wins this, then I'll be convinced it's rigged. no way she should have stayed for next week. If she wins, AI is rigged.

Posted by: Chris at May 17, 2006 10:09 PM

Guess not?
