And Then There Were 5

By Michele

Welcome back for another week of American Idol hijinks! Will Paula cry? Will Scott sneer? Will Seacrest be annoying? All this and more coming up at 8pm.

Tonight's themes are....Leiber and Stoller and Billboard top 40. Interesting juxtaposition of themes.

That's right, everyone. We get two, two, two songs in one!

Hey, I love Smokey Joe's Cafe! This could be good.

Anthony up first. Doing Poison Ivy by the Coasters. Nice choice - fun song.

Oh. Yawn. Yawn. Yawn. He's just so...bland.

Paula has this roundabout way of saying she doesn't like something. She does look like they cleaned her up a bit. She doesn't appear to be cracked out tonight.

Scott a star on Broadway? Please. Spare us.

I. Can't. Look. At. Him. It gives me hives. Well, this isn't the worst thing I ever heard. But he still sucks. He definitely misses a lot of notes. But not his worst performance.

Ok, so with Connie gone, Paula is going to slobber over Jabba now.

Vonzell doing Treat Me Nice. This could be good.

This is alright. I love her voice but I'm not feeling something with this song. It's good..don't get me wrong, but I think she needs to step out and do something different. She's been in the same mode for the past few weeks. Totally agreeing with Simon here. It was messy. I still heart her, though.

Bo doing Stand By Me.

I think I'm smitten. Bo's got it going on. It wasn't his most powerful work, but it still mesmerized the audience and that's what it's all about. He's smooth. Very smooth.

Carrie. She's going for the bad, bad girl thing. She always seems so uncomfortable to me. But her voice is HOT tonight. She just has zero charisma. It's like she's not sure if this is the persona she wants to project. But damn, her voice is HOT.

There is CRAP on the Billboard top 40. Like, 38 50 Cent songs and 2 Kelly Clarkson songs.

What the hell is this? BACKSTREET BOYS? STick a fork in Anthony.

Err..he's actually singing this better than the Backstreet Boys. Huh. I liked it. Everyone hated it.

And please, people. No one is going to do Weezer or Nine Inch Nails. We're stuck with Mariah Carey. Guarantee you.

Scott is doing Brian McKnight and my LORD, he just said HOMIES. Any song that has the word HOMIES should be taken off the charts. And Scott should be kicked in the shins for making my ears bleed.

I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to see Bo try Queens of the Stone Age. Or even Audioslave. That would rule.

Vonzell up. Uh...this is the American Idol group song. That's a weird choice. Sounded wonderful, but again, she was being safe.

Bo with the 70's era fringe jacket. I think this is Los Lonely Boys. I'm telling you. Bo sounds like he's already on the radio. He's got the voice. He's ON. He sounds like he's an established star already.

Carrie up. See, she looks much more comfortable when she's not trying to be something's she's not. This is her zone. It's where she needs to stay the rest of the competition.

We'll be voting for Bo tonight. See you tomorrow.

Excellent theme.

This kid is starting to simply piss me off.

Posted by: Timmer at May 3, 2005 08:04 PM

Did Federov forget how to sing? I guess that implies that he knew how to sing to begin with.

Posted by: nastybastard at May 3, 2005 08:05 PM

Why is he trying to go baritone? Shoot him.

Posted by: Timmer at May 3, 2005 08:05 PM

Okay...officially, he's the worst...Scott can go home tonight.

Posted by: Timmer at May 3, 2005 08:06 PM

"Constantine is gone."

He says that like it's a bad thing.

Posted by: Slublog at May 3, 2005 08:06 PM

Hmmm. Anybody here think Nadia could have worked with this theme?

Posted by: Patrick at May 3, 2005 08:08 PM

Federov made me itch after listening that THAT ... what a shame.

Posted by: Caryss at May 3, 2005 08:09 PM

um ... after listening TO that ... oops

Posted by: Caryss at May 3, 2005 08:10 PM

Nadia would have ruled this theme.

Posted by: Timmer at May 3, 2005 08:10 PM

It was like he was trying to force it into a ballad.

Posted by: Tanya at May 3, 2005 08:10 PM

But Michele, I like the cracked out version of Paula. She's much more entertaining that way.

Posted by: nastybastard at May 3, 2005 08:11 PM

Scott needs a slap in his throat .. he just boils with repressed anger

Posted by: Caryss at May 3, 2005 08:11 PM

What's this? Scott's singing in a manner that doesn't offend my ears? Who is this man, and what did he do with Scott?

Posted by: Timmer at May 3, 2005 08:12 PM

That didn't suck.

Posted by: Timmer at May 3, 2005 08:13 PM

The thing with Scott is that he always seems to come up with a good song for his voice.

Posted by: nastybastard at May 3, 2005 08:13 PM

Not bad. But he should still be slapped repeatedly.

Posted by: Slublog at May 3, 2005 08:14 PM

Interesting. Simon scared some class back into the wigger. That wasn't half bad.

Posted by: Tanya at May 3, 2005 08:14 PM

I like Vonzell .. i DO NOT like this performance ... no no NO

Posted by: Caryss at May 3, 2005 08:15 PM

Can I just tell you how much Elvis would have loved that?

Posted by: Tanya at May 3, 2005 08:16 PM

Vonzell looks gorgeous, and she has an amazing voice. I think she did great. Top 3, probably top 2.

Posted by: nastybastard at May 3, 2005 08:17 PM

I think Simon was just using reverse-psychology on the Scotty voters after last week....

Posted by: robyn at May 3, 2005 08:17 PM

lol good point robyn

Posted by: Caryss at May 3, 2005 08:18 PM

I like Vonzell's mess...does that make sense?

Posted by: Timmer at May 3, 2005 08:18 PM

Heh. I think (hope hope hope) Robyn is right...

Posted by: Slublog at May 3, 2005 08:19 PM

I know what you mean Timmer. I definitely think Vonzell has more moxie that Scott. Even with a messy performance, as Simon states. ;)

Posted by: nastybastard at May 3, 2005 08:20 PM

ohhhhhhhhhhhhh yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

You go Bo.

Posted by: Timmer at May 3, 2005 08:23 PM

Wow. He's in the zone...

Posted by: Slublog at May 3, 2005 08:23 PM

take us to church Bo

Posted by: Timmer at May 3, 2005 08:23 PM

Bo is pretty much flawless tonight.

Posted by: nastybastard at May 3, 2005 08:24 PM

That was outstanding. Truly.

Posted by: Slublog at May 3, 2005 08:25 PM

I hate that song Bo just did!

Posted by: Beth at May 3, 2005 08:25 PM

Very nice. Damn. Very civilized.

Have I mentioned how much I love that sternum tattoo?

Posted by: Tanya at May 3, 2005 08:25 PM

Paula just appreciates Bo. Just like she appreciates blow.

Posted by: nastybastard at May 3, 2005 08:26 PM

I LOVE it when she growlllls. Makes me all tingly.

Posted by: Timmer at May 3, 2005 08:27 PM

Carrie. I think I'm smitten. ;)

The bad girl thing worked for Spears.

Posted by: nastybastard at May 3, 2005 08:27 PM

Loved Carrie's performance but I hated the song

Posted by: Caryss at May 3, 2005 08:28 PM

So, what song do you think Bo will choose from this weeks Billboard charts?

Posted by: nastybastard at May 3, 2005 08:29 PM

As 180° away from Elvis as Vonzell was, that was as close as it could be without being ironic. Very nice.

Posted by: Tanya at May 3, 2005 08:30 PM

Awful song, great performance.

Posted by: Slublog at May 3, 2005 08:30 PM

THIS week's Billboard Charts? WTF is on the charts?

Okay, half of America is going to the site...can't get to it.

Posted by: Timmer at May 3, 2005 08:31 PM

I'm painfully indifferent to Carrie's performance.

Why do I watch this? Same thing every week. Scott sucks ass, the boy is duller than dirt, Carrie is just another blonde chick, and Bo r0xx0rz. I blame all y'all for making me watch, only 'cause reading your comments cracks me up.

Posted by: Beth at May 3, 2005 08:32 PM

Requires login and subscription?

Posted by: Timmer at May 3, 2005 08:33 PM

Good point. I have no idea what's on the charts right now...

Posted by: Tanya at May 3, 2005 08:34 PM

WTF is this bullshit the boy is singing?

Posted by: Beth at May 3, 2005 08:34 PM

Here is the Modern Rock top 20 assuming he picks from that chart.

Holiday, Green Day
Be Yourself, Audioslave
The Hand That Feeds, Nine Inch Nails
Beverly Hills, Weezer
E-Pro, Beck
Little Sister, Queens Of The Stone Age
B.Y.O.B., System Of A Down
Speed Of Sound, Coldplay
The Clincher, Chevelle
Sooner Or Later, Breaking Benjamin
Blue Orchid, The White Stripes
Best Of You, Foo Fighters
Happy?, Mudvayne
Mr. Brightside, The Killers
Ugly, The Exies
Boulevard Of Broken Dreams, Green Day
Walking Dead, Z-Trip
Smile Like You Mean It, The Killers
Cold, Crossfade

Posted by: nastybastard at May 3, 2005 08:34 PM

I've never hated Anthony quite this much before.

Posted by: Timmer at May 3, 2005 08:34 PM

Anthony is going home tomorrow, I think.

Posted by: Slublog at May 3, 2005 08:35 PM

God, make it stop!

Posted by: Beth at May 3, 2005 08:35 PM

There is more of Simon's reverse psychology (hopefully). ;)

Posted by: nastybastard at May 3, 2005 08:36 PM

Okay...I'm back to hatin' Scott. Mr mouth and mr tounge must work together to form words.

Posted by: Timmer at May 3, 2005 08:37 PM

If Bo can pull of Mariah Carey, they should just stop the contest and give him the win right there.

Posted by: nastybastard at May 3, 2005 08:38 PM

i love this song .. why did HE have to sing it ... damn it!

Posted by: Caryss at May 3, 2005 08:38 PM

Bo *commands* the stage. He's hot in every way. Love that beard! But what's up with his pants?

Carrie was pretty great. I love that Elvis song.

The other three can just go home now.

Scott used to dress himself... Who knew?

Posted by: denise at May 3, 2005 08:38 PM

Pretty song. He missed a few notes, but I'm sure the backstreet boys aren't that good live. I don't listen to them, but aren't they, like, as overprocessed as Jessica Simpson's hair?

Posted by: Tanya at May 3, 2005 08:38 PM

Hm. That was not very good at all. Just sing the notes, Scott. Stop playing with your voice.

Oh, and shut up, Randy.

Posted by: Slublog at May 3, 2005 08:39 PM

Excuse me while I go vomit. That song sucks and I don't even know it, but this disgusting Giant Turd literally makes my skin crawl. Suck, suck, suck.

Yo yo yo check it Randy, STFU.

Posted by: Beth at May 3, 2005 08:39 PM

Oh yeah, and Simon needs a HAIRCUT. I mean, dang, what is that on his head?

Posted by: denise at May 3, 2005 08:40 PM

I've never heard that before, but it didn't do anything for me.

Posted by: Tanya at May 3, 2005 08:40 PM

Randy is confused .. he himself is tryin to figure out why Scott has stayed week after week. Well, now we know .. he's "pulled it out, again" folks *sigh*

Posted by: Caryss at May 3, 2005 08:40 PM

Michele, I can hope that he gets to pick a song of the Modern Rock chart. I'd love to see him to System of a Down. ;)

Posted by: nastybastard at May 3, 2005 08:41 PM

Oh my god! Audioslave?! Please Bo, pleeeeeease.

Posted by: Tanya at May 3, 2005 08:41 PM

Bo should do QoTS. He would rock the place with that song.

Posted by: michele at May 3, 2005 08:42 PM

When Paula said the crowd was mesmerized, did she refer to Scott or the dancing Unicorns she sees on stage?

what a wack job. Those eyes...it's as if she's talking to elves. I'm amazed she could get her hands together when she claps.

Calgon, take her away!

Posted by: Joel at May 3, 2005 08:43 PM

I wanna see QOTSA, although I have no clue what their latest stuff sounds like.

Posted by: Beth at May 3, 2005 08:43 PM

Michelle you make me laugh - SO agree with your Scott/Homie comment ... Bo rocks! - Carrie .. not so much ....

Posted by: Mary at May 3, 2005 08:45 PM

QOTSA would be a good fit, but I'd be happy if he gets to pick any of those songs.

Posted by: nastybastard at May 3, 2005 08:45 PM

This is an old song...idn't it?

Posted by: Timmer at May 3, 2005 08:46 PM

smart or stupid that she picked the AI charity record?

Posted by: Caryss at May 3, 2005 08:46 PM

This is on Billboard?

Posted by: Timmer at May 3, 2005 08:46 PM

Vonzell flat out killed that song. Perfect.

Posted by: nastybastard at May 3, 2005 08:46 PM

Sorry, but all I can say is Top 40 is shit.
V can sing, but I hate all this music.

Posted by: Beth at May 3, 2005 08:47 PM

A very off night. Ouch. Reverse psychology.

Posted by: Slublog at May 3, 2005 08:47 PM

Memorizing?! BWAHHHHHHhhhh...he's such a tool.

Posted by: Timmer at May 3, 2005 08:47 PM

Vamanos!!!

Love this song.

Posted by: Timmer at May 3, 2005 08:48 PM

Michele, it is Los Lonely Boys

Posted by: nastybastard at May 3, 2005 08:49 PM

Los Lonely Boys. Cool. I can dig it. This is still on the charts?

Posted by: denise at May 3, 2005 08:50 PM

Bo is so friggin hot

Posted by: Caryss at May 3, 2005 08:50 PM

Los Lonely Boys Live at The Beacon is a better recording than the studio version...those boys can sing like a motherfucker.

Posted by: Timmer at May 3, 2005 08:51 PM

Bo did a great job, I still would have liked to see him do something from the Rock chart. :/

Posted by: nastybastard at May 3, 2005 08:51 PM

If Bo doesn't win this thing, I'm going to be very annoyed.

Posted by: Tanya at May 3, 2005 08:52 PM

Denise, yes. It's #2 on the Adult Contemporary chart: Link

Posted by: nastybastard at May 3, 2005 08:53 PM

...and Bo sang THAT song better than they do live.

Posted by: Timmer at May 3, 2005 08:53 PM

I wish he did rock too. Maybe Carrie will. (ha!)

Posted by: Beth at May 3, 2005 08:53 PM

It's Bo's night. That was good.

Posted by: Slublog at May 3, 2005 08:54 PM

I'm thinking Anthony's in because of VFTW...which leaves Scott and Vonzell for bottom two.

Posted by: Timmer at May 3, 2005 08:54 PM

Carrie was sweet...

Posted by: Timmer at May 3, 2005 08:56 PM

Well, bye bye Boy. Another week of Giant Turd.

Posted by: Beth at May 3, 2005 08:57 PM

Prediction - Top 3 is Bo, Vonzell and Carrie.

Posted by: kat at May 3, 2005 08:58 PM

Best: Bo.
Worst:Anthony
Who Should Go Home: Scott, just on general principles.
Who Will Go Home: Anthony, because he was pretty terrible tonight.

Posted by: Slublog at May 3, 2005 08:58 PM

Pickin' up the phone for Bo and Carrie tonight. Just don't care enough about the rest.

Posted by: Timmer at May 3, 2005 08:59 PM

Remember what happened to Constantine... hope it happens to Scott Pilates and "I made it on my sad story" Federov.

Posted by: nastybastard at May 3, 2005 09:00 PM

But Timmer -- we

Posted by: Patrick at May 3, 2005 09:00 PM

I think after this show, I need to listen to some Slayer.

Posted by: Beth at May 3, 2005 09:00 PM

Good idea, Beth.

Posted by: nastybastard at May 3, 2005 09:03 PM

Cool site! Carrie should win this competition .. her voice is natural. A born singer - she's great. And she may be just another "blonde chick" but she can sing!! Go Carrie. Bottom three tomorrow: Scott, Anthony, Bo (or Vonzell, who knows with the way the voting goes) ;)

Posted by: Stacey at May 3, 2005 10:27 PM

Anthony's going home.

Posted by: Dean Esmay at May 3, 2005 10:28 PM

Okay, and hour and a half after the show and I can't get a line in to vote for Bo or Carrie, perpetual busy signal, I'll take that as a good thing.

Posted by: Timmer at May 3, 2005 10:38 PM

One hour and 58 minutes after the show and I could get only one vote in for Carrie, Vonzell, and Bo eatch. It seems people finally have enough sense not to let the actual talent leave before scott.

Posted by: Taira at May 3, 2005 11:07 PM

Once again, Bo was awesome, great, outstanding, fabulous, etc. Two great songs in one night--what more could anyone ask for? Voted for Bo the entire two hours and barely got through. Vonzell was disappointing to me tonight. I didn't like her version of Elvis's Treat Me Right and she should never have picked the American Idol single to sing as "her" song.

Posted by: Melinda at May 3, 2005 11:33 PM

Watched Idol tonight and thought I'd do some surfing to find out why Scott is still on the show. Yes he sucks. He has zero star quality. But oh my gawd people -- I can't believe the horrible things many of you have written about him. Judge his performances, judge his talent -- but none of us have the right to judge him. There is a meanness to your messages that I hope you never have to face yourselves. Will I vote for Scott tonight? No way. He deserves to go. But I think I'll draw the line at attacking him personally. After all, I don't know the guy -- and neither do most of you.

Posted by: Rose at May 4, 2005 12:39 AM

Rose,

I'm not sure where you're from Ma'am, but where I come from, when you talk as much smack at Scott does? You either back it up or get slapped around like a bad puppy.

Posted by: Timmer at May 4, 2005 06:33 AM

What do you make of this? Last night I actually voted for Bo. Ok, and anthony and Vonzell just anyone but SCOTT the asshole. BUT, Trach Boy and Postal Girl had busy lines up to 11:00 pm and Bo's was clear after 10:00 pm. Guess no one was voting for Bo, so tonight may be it for him.

Posted by: jen at May 4, 2005 09:22 AM

Gosh Rose...maybe, just maybe you're right. Perhaps Scott isn't an obnoxious fat slob of a trailer-park hick with no talent and a propensity for violence. Could it be that he is just a regular guy trying to make it today's cruel world? Golly. Naaaahhhhh. Stick a fork in the greasy porker. All for our amusement. Isn't this fun?

Posted by: Dave at May 4, 2005 09:33 AM

Does anyone else curse Lard Ass when he claps his hands like a trained seal and yells "YEAH" like he's a member of Fitty's posse? One of the reasons I want him to go is he want to see him get ghetto on everyone.

Posted by: jen at May 4, 2005 09:41 AM

Much as I'd like to see him pull out a "gat" and go all "187" live on the air, I think his ghetto act is faker than Paula's talent assessments. He'll go quietly.

Posted by: Ian S. at May 4, 2005 10:07 AM

We missed you last night, Ian!

Posted by: michele at May 4, 2005 10:08 AM

Jen: I voted for Bo multiple times over the two hours, and the lines were consistently busy the whole time. I live on the west coast, and I voted up until the cut-off time, and they were busy. So, I think Bo is okay.

I thought Anthony was waay too casual on the first song, and in Simon's words, "just not good enough." The second song was better, but not fantastic.

Scott was a'ight. He does pick songs that he can carry off, but he's not Idol finalist material, IMHO. I really HATE his attitude and really, everything about him, but I've stopped hoping he'll go home.

I thought Vonzell was just great last night. She is beautiful and has a great voice. One of the best.

Bo is always awesome!! I will vote for him every week until he is no longer a contestant. (Hopefully, he will be in the final 2 with Carrie, but who knows?)

Carrie is very good, and I love her voice, but she lacks that 'X' factor, for me. She's a beautiful girl, but she needs to add some sizzle and move around more!! "Trouble" could have been HOT, but it was just lukewarm.

Top: Bo, Carrie, Vonzell
Bottom: Anthony, Scott
Going Home: Anthony

Posted by: Janet at May 4, 2005 11:47 AM

I hope so Janet, because after 10:00 pm last night, I was able to hit redial and vote for Bo every time. But crazier things have happened and people might thing Bo doesn't need to win AI, just like LaToya London. Carrie really needs to be humbled tonight and placed in the bottom three. LudaScott just needs to leave and that's that. I know it won't happen but I can dream.

Posted by: jen at May 4, 2005 12:02 PM

I voted first for "The Vonz" first and racked up 10 votes in 15 min on my home phone, then it took about 45 min to get 20 for Bo. I switched to my cell and only got one busy signal, but when I tried my home phone all I could get was busy. My vote tally was 25-30 for Vonz 35-40 for Bo and Carrie.

Posted by: sopedaddy at May 4, 2005 01:53 PM

After reading this blog, Rose has a point, but with all due respect, the chinese pig is getting back what he's putting out, crap.

I watched last night's episode again on tape. If America has an ear for music, even the smallest ear, then Scott should go. Really, the arrogance he displayed revealed his insecurities, and at this point, why isn't he playing for his fans instead of going after Simon? Of course, maybe his fan base likes that. He's the new Jasmine so far, but an expanded version. I agree with Simon: Vonzell butchered that Elvis song, and her second vocal was not perfect. And I like Vonzell, but she needs to step it up a notch. Scott - gone. Anthony improved on his second vocal, but he should last another week, if there is any justice, but we all know that this is American Idol, so anything's possible.

Posted by: idolfan at May 4, 2005 03:34 PM

They both suck (Scott and Anthony) so it doesn't matter who goes tonight. Scott is more obnoxious so I say he goes. Guess he won't be thinking about what to sing next week (except in his shower)...bioooootch
