And Then There Were 9

By Michele

It's Tuesday and we're back. Tonight's theme is......(waiting)

And what the hell is Seacrest wearing? That is one fugly shirt.

Like I said, tonight's theme is.....

Musicals!

This is a good theme. Some of the contestants really have a chance to shine tonight. Let's hope they make good choices.

Gangsta boy Scott is up first.

Oh no. He's doing my favorite song from my favorite musical (Impossible Dream, Man of LaMancha). I am going to be so biased about this. But NO. NO. This song is meant to be sung in a deep voice. It's supposed to be strong. This is not. Sorry, I think this is weak. It's not a pop song, it's not an R&B ballad. Making it your own is one thing, but making it blase is another. This is all besides the fact that I LOATHE him.

Someone stab Paula. She's loaded again. Heartfelt? Extraordinary? She's freaking insane.

Carrie up next. I bet she does something from Annie Get Your Gun. OOps, Constantine up. Doing My Funny Valentine, from Babes in Arms. He's doing the crooning thing. This is awful. I feel like I'm in Atlantic City. If he looks at the camera like that one more time I'm going to smash the tv.

Look at Paula. Out. Of. Her. Mind. I guarantee you there's a wet spot on her chair. Hah. Simon called him on the pouting. Maybe I would give Constantine a better review if I didn't look at him while he was singing.

Now, Carrie. Doing Hello Young Lovers, from The King and I. I started out with mediocre feelings about Carrie, but she's grown on me. This was good performance. She did a nice job with a pretty song. I know what Simon meant by old fashioned. I think it was the dress. It looks like something Ann Margaret wore in Bye Bye Birdie.

Vonzell, doing People from Funny Girl. Good choice for her. Oh man, she has a beautiful voice. She's really come a long way. I've gone from apathetic about her to absolutely adoring her. Beautiful job! Awesome, even.

Anthony doing Climb Every Mountain from Sound of Music. Interesting choice. It will take a lot to pull this off.
I don't know, he's making it sound like a marching band version. Maybe because I love the original so much, this isn't doing much for me. It should be deeper and stronger. Eh. No power. Didn't like it. And Paula, bless her empty brain, liked it because he made it sound like a pop song. Figures.

Nikko next. Oh, he's doing a beautiful song, One Hand One Heart. This was sang at my first wedding. ::Shudder::
I think he's killing it. KILLING IT. MURDER! ARREST THAT MAN!

What? Is it me? They love it!

Anwar doing If Ever I Should Leave You from Camelot. Well, there's the old Anwar! I really dug that. Welcome back, dude!!!

Bo doing Corner of the Sky from Pippin. This is ok. Not my favorite performance of his. Not setting me on fire. But adequate. Nice shiny shirt he's got there.

I think Paula takes self-esteem classes during the week and tries out her lessons on the contestants.

Nadia up. She's in sultry mode tonight. Sounds better than the last couple of weeks. I think this is as much of a comeback as Anwar. Nice job. Sounded great.

This theme was.....eh. Could have been better. But really, what themes are left that haven't been done?

I think we'll vote for Vonzell tonight.

Oh lord, the Impossible Dream? Yikes. Bu-bye wife beater.

Posted by: Faith at April 5, 2005 08:03 PM

I agree, Mich. This SUCKS. No DRAMA in it at all.

Posted by: Faith at April 5, 2005 08:05 PM

Yuck.

Posted by: Ian S. at April 5, 2005 08:06 PM

I totally missed Scott's performance, so I don't have any idea how he did.

Posted by: nastybastard at April 5, 2005 08:07 PM

Well, that was a lame start.

Posted by: Tanya at April 5, 2005 08:07 PM

That commercial with Seacrest and William Hung was pretty damn funny.

Posted by: Faith at April 5, 2005 08:09 PM

At the beginning of Scott's performance, I wanted to beat him in the head with a mallet so he'd get on the frickin' beat. And how the hell can you never have heard of "The Impossible Dream?" I mean geez, even if you've never seen a musical, you have to have heard that song at some point in your life! Unless you're a gansta thug, I guess....

Posted by: Amanda at April 5, 2005 08:10 PM

God I hate Constantine.

Posted by: Faith at April 5, 2005 08:12 PM

Constantine... *puke*

Posted by: nastybastard at April 5, 2005 08:13 PM

Damn him for doing that well. I wanted him to slip and say "is your chin a little weak?"

Posted by: Tanya at April 5, 2005 08:14 PM

Randy and Paula are on crack.

Posted by: Ian S. at April 5, 2005 08:14 PM

Okay, I was looking at the computer and thought Constatine was good vocal-wise, but hated to look at him.

As for Paula, I want what she's on.

Posted by: JohnO at April 5, 2005 08:15 PM

I wish he had really done "Beauty School Dropout," tho.

Posted by: Tanya at April 5, 2005 08:17 PM

Carrie... me likey.

Posted by: nastybastard at April 5, 2005 08:18 PM

"As for Paula, I want what she's on."

In about 45 minutes, that will be Constatine.

Posted by: Armchair Genius at April 5, 2005 08:18 PM

Very nice vocal by Carrie.

Posted by: Ian S. at April 5, 2005 08:19 PM

Yeah, dull as dishwater, but a beautiful performance. No one else could have pulled that off.

Posted by: Tanya at April 5, 2005 08:22 PM

Hey, how did I get to be a Vonzell fan?

Posted by: Faith at April 5, 2005 08:27 PM

Wow. Vonzell is doing an amazing job!

Posted by: Ian S. at April 5, 2005 08:27 PM

Good solid performance by Vonzell. Probably my favorite so far...

Posted by: nastybastard at April 5, 2005 08:27 PM

Vonzelll! Mmmmmmm!! Such a luscious--Randy said DUDE??

Posted by: Matty at April 5, 2005 08:27 PM

Oh great, our resident perv is back.

Posted by: Faith at April 5, 2005 08:29 PM

Vonzell = Invasion of the Body Snatchers

Posted by: Tanya at April 5, 2005 08:30 PM

Federov pulled that off pretty well.

Posted by: Faith at April 5, 2005 08:31 PM

Nice to see you too Faith ;-)

Awful, jesstt awfulll

Posted by: Matty at April 5, 2005 08:31 PM

That needs about 50 times more power than Anthony has.

Posted by: Ian S. at April 5, 2005 08:31 PM

Anthony could have the voice of an angel, and I'd still not like him. There is just something about him that I'm just not fond of... *bah humbug*

Posted by: nastybastard at April 5, 2005 08:32 PM

Federov - Singing it like a church song lost me. And that last note was bad.

Posted by: Tanya at April 5, 2005 08:32 PM

In case anyones interested - Constantine and Carries performances were glitched out here in the tampa area. Instantly skipped to the judges after carries performance as soon as constantine started. Really sucks. Guess the local affiliate must've had a problem.

Posted by: BlueBig at April 5, 2005 08:38 PM

That was so-so. And the backup singer was *awful*.

Posted by: Ian S. at April 5, 2005 08:38 PM

Nikko *puke*

Posted by: nastybastard at April 5, 2005 08:38 PM

Wow. I really liked that. He didn't hit every note right, but wow.

Posted by: Tanya at April 5, 2005 08:38 PM

Nikko: eh.

Posted by: Faith at April 5, 2005 08:39 PM

As usual, I'm in the minority... :o)

Posted by: Tanya at April 5, 2005 08:40 PM

I liked it too, Tanya! I thought he did a pretty good job.

Posted by: Amanda at April 5, 2005 08:41 PM

I knew Michele wouldn't like it. But I don't really know West Side Story very well, so I didn't have the original embedded in my brain.

Posted by: Tanya at April 5, 2005 08:43 PM

Anwar has a lot to prove tonite. He better do it.

Posted by: Faith at April 5, 2005 08:44 PM

Come on Anwar. I hope you do better this week. SHOW SOME PERSONALITY!

Posted by: nastybastard at April 5, 2005 08:44 PM

Oh, yeah. Anwar is BACK.

Posted by: Ian S. at April 5, 2005 08:46 PM

Yep, that rocked.

Posted by: Faith at April 5, 2005 08:46 PM

I second what Randy said. Best Singer on American Idol.

Posted by: nastybastard at April 5, 2005 08:46 PM

I like Bo, but for some reason when he sings I think of Tom Jones. Not sure how that connection was made... this performance is just ok for me.

Posted by: nastybastard at April 5, 2005 08:48 PM

Bo. Not digging the version of the song, but good. Not wow, but good.

Posted by: Faith at April 5, 2005 08:49 PM

I thought that was a step backwards for Bo.

Posted by: Ian S. at April 5, 2005 08:49 PM

Did Paula just call Bo a winner or a wiener?

Posted by: nastybastard at April 5, 2005 08:50 PM

My husband and I think Bo should have done something from "Hair" or "Tommy"--he would have done an awesome rendition of "Pinball Wizard"

Posted by: Amanda at April 5, 2005 08:52 PM

Anwar: Sweet!

Bo: Couldn't he have done something from like, Tommy? That song was very, very wordy. I didn't hate it, but it was a weird choice.

Posted by: Tanya at April 5, 2005 08:53 PM

Anwar is totally back. Bo did really good for a genre he's really uncomfy with. The girls have been amazing so far.

Posted by: Newt at April 5, 2005 08:53 PM

Bo would have ROCKED with something from Tommy or Hair.

Posted by: michele at April 5, 2005 08:54 PM

Nadia!!!!!! Wow!!!! Best performance of the night.

Posted by: Faith at April 5, 2005 08:56 PM

Great performance by Nadia

Posted by: nastybastard at April 5, 2005 08:56 PM

I think Scott is gone this week. Sorry Scott.

Posted by: nastybastard at April 5, 2005 08:57 PM

Fantastic job by Nadia.

Posted by: Ian S. at April 5, 2005 08:57 PM

And officially, all the ladies kicked ass this evening. Nadia works the crowd better than the other two, I think. That might be her edge.

Posted by: Newt at April 5, 2005 08:59 PM

Neil Diamond week!!

Posted by: Tanya at April 5, 2005 09:01 PM

Just found out via the local news that Bo's Grandma makes all his clothes. That explains a lot.

Posted by: skillzy at April 5, 2005 09:02 PM

BlueBig, we're in the Tampa area (watched on DirecTV's local Fox 13 channel) and we got the entire show - didn't have any performances cut.

Posted by: robyn at April 5, 2005 10:04 PM

Anwar: 'BOUT TIME! Guess he wants to win now.

Carrie: I'm trying to be down with her. But.. It.. Ain't.. WORKIN'.. blah

Nikko: Did an R&B style performance. Good not great.

Anthony: Needs to go.

Scott: Bad man, just bad.

Bo: Pulled it off. Still my boy no matter what.

Nadia: Song fit her perfectly. Sultry mode worked.

Vonzell: Better and better. Seriously diggin' her.

Constantine: Very interesting. Hate to say it he's starting to grow on me.

Overall I feel Anwar had to best performance of the night.

Posted by: Solomon at April 5, 2005 11:20 PM

hey ryan, nice shirt!

hey paula, nice skull and crossbones ring! yeah, you're hardcore.

scott? zzzzz
constantine? eh, ok. joelle really liked it, though.
carrie? still has yet to wow me. with her voice, anyway.
vonzell? i still think she's been replaced by a robot. she's really improved a lot, both in her voice and her look.
anthony? what was that outfit? i really thought he was trying to seduce me. i don't think the world is ready for a sexy version of "Climb Every Mountain."
nikko? zzzzz
bo? eh. ok.
nadia? dig the dress.

one more comment - i'm really sick of paula sucking every dick and licking every pussy. what good is a critic if she's always high and she loves everyone?

Posted by: mikey at April 5, 2005 11:55 PM

GO Constantine!!!!!~!!!!!!!I liked the high note. Constantine did the best then Vonzell carrie and Anwar. Anwar is back. He is definitely back! I am glad he didn't move around alot his moves are weird.
GO CONSTANTINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: LuverUvAmericanIdol at April 6, 2005 01:33 AM

Scott sucked big time. Anthony barely holding on. The rest did great.

Posted by: jen at April 6, 2005 09:47 AM

I thought everyone did a pretty good job considering they were doing show tunes. Scott was okay, but I just dislike him so much. Please, he has gotta go this week America, k? I hope everyone voted appropriately for everyone else last night. Scott is my pick to go this week (and every week until he does go).
Regarding the other performances:
Constantine: He's actually quite good. He has gotten SO much better since he has been doing non-rock songs. The camera mugging is a bit much, but if you don't look at him and just listen, that was really good. I like him, mugging and all.
Carrie: Carrie has a beautiful voice, pitch-perfect, but she is just SOOOOO boring. I agreed with Simon about her looking like she was in a "washing soap" commercial. Note to Simon: it's called DETERGENT.
Vonzell: I really like her. The girl has "chops," and she looked absolutely beautiful last night. That was a really good performance. I'd take a performance by Vonzell or Nadia over Carrie any day.
Nikko: Can he ever sing a song on pitch? He was out of key during most of the song (and every song he performs), but bless his heart, he gives it his all. Despite that, he's gotta go (after Scott), which leads us to...
Anthony: I really do not think he is a bad singer. He actually has a really good voice; he's just kinda "cheesy" and not very likable. He's #3 on my list to go home.
Bo: I LOVE Bo; I would have his love child. I like his outfits; I think he's sexy. I liked the song, it was okay, but I agree that he should have done "Pinball Wizard" or something from Hair. I really think he blew his chance there. I hope he didn't actually pick the song by pointing to some random choice. Not a good strategy.
Anwar: Anwar was "on" last night! Finally! One of the best performances!!!
Nadia: LOVED Nadia!! She looked very glamorous and beautiful, and sang just great! Also one of the best!!

Top 3 Last Night: Anwar, Nadia, Vonzell
Bottom 3: Scott, Nikko, Anthony, with Scott going home tonight.

There have been some posts circulating on idolonfox that the singers were given a list of selected musicals to chose a song from. None of the great rock musicals (like Jesus Christ Superstar, Tommy or Hair) were included on the list. Oklahoma was not on the list either (I was sure Carrie would chose something from this). And I recall Ryan at the beginning of the show saying something to the effect that the singers had to chose songs from "classical" musicals they had never heard of before. I think this is why we didn't get to hear Bo sing a great rock song. I think he did a fabulous job with what he had to work with. Has anyone heard anything differently about choice of musical last night?

Posted by: Melinda at April 6, 2005 11:11 AM

Melinda, the musicals chosen were the only ones that got clearance to use the songs from. That's why it was so limited. I think we would see vastly different choices every round, if they could sing what they wanted without legal clearance first.

Posted by: michele at April 6, 2005 11:14 AM

You're right, of course. I have just seen so many comments saying that Bo blew his chance by not picking a different song that I don't think people realize that the choice is limited. (As you can probably tell, I'm a Bo fan). Thanks, by the way, for a great blog--I love to read your commentary on the show!

Posted by: Melinda at April 6, 2005 11:38 AM

Hi Melinda! I'm a Bo fan, too. Thanks for the info! That helps explain the choices (but wouldn't it be great to see Bo perform one of those songs!)

Posted by: Janet at April 6, 2005 12:03 PM

I wonder if he could've done something from Moving Out (or Up or Over, or whatever it's called). We've heard people sing Billy Joel before, and he's rock...ish.

Posted by: Tanya at April 6, 2005 12:06 PM

I think it would have been awesome to hear Bo sing something from Jesus Christ Superstar or any of the other rock musicals. But I'm biased--I think he sounds great no matter what he's singing :)

Posted by: Melinda at April 6, 2005 12:40 PM

I read all the replies from this original post and I still haven't been able to find out "What did Nadia sign on April5?

Barb

*snerk*

Posted by: Sekimori at April 7, 2005 07:44 PM

Oh, sorry Barb. You need to highlight the whole page, change the font to Wingdings and then copy and paste it into Notepad. The first letter of each paragraph will spell what Nadia sang.

Either that, or try Idolonfox.com

Posted by: michele at April 7, 2005 08:00 PM

Seikimori: Where's your assessment of last night's voting debacle? Details, we need details!!!
