Mario Update

By Stacy

The Drudge Report (take with usual tablespoon of salt) is hinting this morning that Senor Vasquez quit the competition because he didn't want to be tied to AI's notoriously restrictive contract. Rumors on what the contract contains from this fan board (so take with the usual carton of salt):

All of the contestants have been under a general contract. The top ten have the sign a new and updated contracted that has more restrictions and goes into detail how much the IDOL people have control and how much money they will get. Apparently it is a five year contract and the producers get 35-50% of your earnings. They also have control over your look and image. All top 12 people were given a copy of the contract and it had to be signed before Tuesdays performance. The two that get voted out will not be held to the contract terms -- only the top ten.

If this is why he left, then it might actually have been a smart move...IF he can avoid being blacklisted for not "playing the game". And I have a feeling that's a big IF. Simon looks like a vindictive bastard, doesn't he?

As to the "famiy issues" excuse, apparently his mom has no idea what "family issues" they might be having:

But Vazquez's mom, Ada, said she knew of no problem involving the family and had not idea why he left the show.

Good riddance, I say, I won't have to look at that awful nose, or his freakish collection of hats, anymore.

My thinking was that he got offered a better deal, with an immediate record contract, elsewhere.

I wonder if he took a look at that restrictive contract and realized he would be better off without whatever publicity AI would get him.

Control over looks? Jesus.

But you would think the AI producers would be smart enough to build in a no-competition clause by this point, not just AFTER they get into the top 12. Hell, I would!

Posted by: Sekimori at March 14, 2005 09:22 AM

You can bet they will next year.

I wonder if they are even going to say anything abotu it tomorrow or just treat the audience like idiots?

Posted by: michele at March 14, 2005 10:32 AM

Oh please. You know they'll treat us like ijits.

Does anyone think that maybe Nikko's dad (hall of fame baseball player) paid Mario a big sum of money to quit so Nikko could be "back in the game" ... hmmmmmm

No Lisa We don't think that Ozzie paid anyone anything. He would need to pay the American voters to keep him in the running. Cool imagination though. dw

Posted by: Denise at March 14, 2005 05:15 PM

If this is true, why has Kelly Clarkson changed so much. She went from R&B fatty to slim rocker chick. How much of her earnings does she have to give AI?

Posted by: Liz at March 14, 2005 07:54 PM

I respect Mario for getting out of this show. He's much too talented to be controlled by Simon and his crappy pop stars. He was absolutely my pick to win, even though my friends and I watch this show as a joke, becuase that's what it is. Reuben sucked, Fantasia is a nobody already. Kelly's the only one making any kind of a name for herself. The show is totally fixed anyway, you'll never convince me that Britsih moron Simon has it all turn out how he wants. (ever notice that his pick to win is always the one who does?) that's why it's funny that Mario left probably due to the contract, because he was simon's favorite, like he said during auditions.

Posted by: Sarah at March 14, 2005 10:26 PM

Now I'm routing for the music teacher. He's an absolute sweetheart, and his performances have been solid every week. He deserves it!

Posted by: Emilie at March 14, 2005 10:28 PM

I hated to see Mario leave but he obviously knows something that us fans don't. I really think that America shouldn't be the deciding group every week. I think it is the judges jobs to vote and their jobs only. They are supposed to know sooo much about the business. Why, especially if Simon is so critical, would they give it over to the American public to decide on the vote offs when they are supposed to be so professional? Good luck to you Mario. I am sure that your choice was a good one. Take care and don't worry. You will make it anyway.

Posted by: tim at March 14, 2005 11:26 PM

tim -

The whole point of the music industry is that the public decides who is good and who isn't. Take a look at the talent scattered through the country right now. Then take a look at who the "stars" are. Any comparison?

Nope. The stars are all morons who have one little thing they do well (usually something having to do with tabloid attraction) and the talent is being ignored.

Just like on AI most of the time.

i think that Mario Vazquez looks like he is a really nice person because he hasn't sweared or done anything mean he is also really cute and i want to meet him soooooooooooo bad but because of him quiting i don't have a reason for going to the American Idol compition.

Posted by: emma at March 15, 2005 08:51 AM

I Think that Mario's leaving had to do with a contract offer. but in addition to the statement made earlier by sarah "you do have the right to your own apinion, but Ruben has a beautiful voice and fantasia is doing very well, as for keely I give her, her props. but she still doesn't know if she wants to R&B or Rock. but over all the girl can for mario for what ever reason i wish him the best.

Posted by: Angela E. at March 15, 2005 11:53 AM

Josh Gracin is a former idol top 4 and he is successful in the country music area. Kelly is very talented. Ruben really was not the best choice in Idol Season 2. Josh, Clay and Kimberly were better. Give Fantasia time. She's just releasing her album and has a beautiful voice.

Posted by: Billie at March 15, 2005 01:56 PM

And, Nikko Smith has a nice range, I think he should've been kept before Constantine, Scott Savol or Anthony Federov. My favorites are Anwar, Bo, Jessica and Nadia. They're all very talented, probably the most talented group I've seen in the Idol series.

I have to wonder if anyone read more than two words of the all capitalized posts. I know I sure didn't. Anyway. I really hope Idol doesn't think that America is stupid. They should say something about it on the show, in case there are people who haven't heard about it. I mean, it's not like people are going to click, "The best of the rest"" on the contestants page and see that he withdrew from the competition. Hell, even if everyone in America DOES know.. they should still mention something. It'd be pretty crappy of them not to.

Posted by: Nikki at March 15, 2005 04:47 PM

Thanks Denise ... I'm surprised I'm the only one who thought of that so far actually .. that Mario was paid by Nikko's dad, the hall of fame baseball player to quit so his son could go back. Oh well .. just a thought. I can't stand that annoying Mikala, or whatever her name is .. please let her be voted off next! Something is "fishy" with her .. she started out happy and obnoxious and wouldn't shut up, now she's calm and trying to sing songs she's not ready for .. which is making her more annoying. Uggghhh .....

Posted by: Lisa at March 15, 2005 08:27 PM

No problem Lisa!!! I just love your imagination, it goes waaaaaaaaaaaaaay out there and ya never ever know. dw

Posted by: Denise at March 15, 2005 10:15 PM

I am truly dissapointed that this young man has decided to leave the competion. I watched the competion today and it was not the same without Mario. I am amazed that all these people are making coments about his sexual preference like it has something to do with his talent. I dont believe he is gay but anyway I hope that Anwar wins and carrie as my second choice. Mario I hope you come out with an album I would definately buy it . i am a fan !!!!!

Posted by: Eddie at March 15, 2005 10:32 PM

I'm in the west coast so I haven't seen the show tonight yet. I've been reading everyone's comments though that have seen the show already .. it is cool to know ahead of time what is going to happen so I can look for those 'little' things. I guess if Nikko gets voted off again, so much for my theory of his dad "buying" his way back in ... ;o)

Posted by: Lisa at March 15, 2005 10:41 PM

According to MTV the contract he did sign (as did all 24 semi-finalists) only ties him to Idol for 3 months after the current season ends. Much better than 5 years, me thinks...

Posted by: robyn at March 16, 2005 08:27 AM

Has anyone heard the rumor that Mario did a gay porn magazine spread and he doesn't want it coming out.

Posted by: rick at March 16, 2005 09:07 AM

I do believe that Mario and Anwar are gay, but that doesn't affect my vote. I thought Mario was a great singer and performer. Although some people don't care about his sexual preference, he may not feel comfortable having it exploited. I'm not sure about the contract issue, but I do think that whether it is now or later, Mario will make it. I'm a big fan of his voice. I think Anwar is boring and Nadia is overrated. I think Jessica doesn't get the props she deserves. I hope Nikko can do well and prove everyone wrong.

Posted by: Cynthia at March 16, 2005 10:24 AM

Dear World,

Mario skips. But why all this fuss? Idol is just another reality show and this time one of the players got real and got out while the getting was good. It's probably the smartest move he'll ever make.

Dear Claudine,

It's a game. Try not to take it so very seriously.

Yer um Mario is a wimp for quiting and I think he was afraid that people would find out about something in his past he wants to keep secret, maybe jail time, maybe he is a drug dealer...who knows.

Posted by: MARIO at March 17, 2005 05:29 PM

I thought from when the news first hit about Mario's quitting that it probably had to do with the contract saga.

To those that wish that AI would tell the fans, I am betting that AI knows nothing about the true reason so can't tell anyone the truth.

And Mario can't tell anyone because it makes him look like he wanted to quit just for the money of a fast contract and maybe a little stuck up to think that he didnt need AI anymore

AI makes the singers sign contracts restricting and controlling their careers for a while after the show starts but isn't that fair since none of these people would be where they are without AI?

Mario along with all these singers have been around for awhile, they are mostly all adults and havent made it rich on their own so of course AI is responsible for whatever fame they get.

I dont find it unreasonable that AI takes a cut either, thats what they do, make people famous for profit, no one should be surprised or hate it.

Hello all:
I think Mario quits because he got a good deal from a record company who sees his talent. If Mario wins at the end, he will have lots of deals and the record company will not have a chance to compete at the end. It is clear to this stage of the competition that Mario comes out as the best candidate to win this Idol competition. Why not grab Mario first before other record companies buy him out with tons of money deal? I would praise a smart move by whatever record company and by Mario. If Mario loses at the end, his record dream will vanish. It is smart to leave now with tons of money in his hands for sure. Smart move by Mario. Mario will be the winner anywhich way anybody can see.

I do not like Anwar or Nikko or any other idols except Jesica with a great voice. I hope she will be the next idol for this season 4.
