Girls Night out 3/1

By Michele

The boys rocked the house last night - can the girls match their performance?

Me, I'm not holding my breath. With the exception of Carrie, Aloha and Nadia, the girls are weak. And Aloha better have toned down the girl-on-the-street vibe if I'm going to keep pulling for her.

I'm in bitch mode tonight. It's been one of those days. So stay tuned for an hour of me having no patience with the AI girls (or Paula) tonight.

Tanya is doing her take over here.

Aloha Mischeaux up first - and she's toned down the street wear. Looking very casual in jeans tonight.

Interesting song choice - why don't these people ever choose songs that allow them to belt one out? They keep choosing these low key tunes. She sounds nice...but nothing extraordinary.

Surprise, all three agree with me.
---

Lindsey Cardinale up now. She's going for that "Got really drunk at the local bar and went up on stage on a dare" thing.

Credit for doing something different. Went for the home run, but ended up with a dribbler to first base. I thought it was kind of ...trashy.

---
Jessica Sierra up now. What is it with these girls? She looks like a reject from a stage show about some bar girl from the 1970's.

Ok, she sounded good. Improvement from last week. Still no shining star, but better than she has been. Good choice of song for and she - unlike the other girls tonight. - sang her heart out.

--
Dakota in the comments below brought up a good point: Is it our TV or does it seem like the music is drowning out the vocals tonight? So far it's actually been kind of hard to hear both girls.

I was thinking the same thing - is it like this for anyone else? I feel like I'm struggling to hear them sing - like there's some sound problems in which the music is drowning out the vocals.

---

It's Mikalah Gordon time. Have I mentioned how much I HATE her voice?

Come to the cabaret my friends....it's Liza Minelli!

I know they are going to fawn all over her. I know it.

Mad props, dawg. Aight. Sigh. Even Simon liked her. This chick gives me hives, I just can't say anything good about her. Sorry.

--

Celena Rae up. Do these girls believe in appearance? Looking nice? Or is it Casual Tuesday on American Idol?

She reminds me of Journey, if Journey had a female singer. That's not a compliment.

Run. Of. The. Mill.

---

Finally, Nadia Turner is up. Now we'll see something special.

Eh, not the greatest song choice. Nadia, Nadia, you are totally letting me down tonight. You were going to me my saving grace for having to sit through this. She kind of pulled it off at the end but still - not a good song for her. Still my favorite, though.

---

Amanda Avila. Oh boy. Disco.

I get it now. They all went shopping together and bought the same shirt, different colors.

That was..uninspiring.

At this point, I'm betting on an all guys final.

---

Janay Castine. She looks less scared tonight. And this is a bold song for her.

Ok nevermind. There goes that deer in the headlights look again.

That was....odd. It seemed like she didn't want to be singing it. She should have been gone a long time ago. I'm making a bet now that she is voted off Wednesday night.

---

Carrie Underwood up. She is NOT doing this song. Please tell me she's not doing this song.

Sorry. No one can pull this song off. No one. And she's not. She's good, yes, but this song is supposed to be BELTED out with FEELING. Not like you're in some rodeo bar performing for the guys on the mechanical bull. Big disappointment from Carrie. Lesson here: You cannot sing Janis Joplin, no matter who you are. Don't even try. You will pale in comparison, no matter how well you sing.

---

Vonzell Solomon up. This is by far her best performance and it's not even great. She has seriously loosened up. Good job, Vonzell. You bought yourself another week on the basis of belting one out and having really weak competition.

I have no idea who to vote for tonight.

Jessica was pretty good. Lindsey, trashy definitely.

Posted by: Faith at March 1, 2005 08:15 PM

I was pretty impressed with Jessica there, but that shirt-thing is just odd.

Posted by: Ian S. at March 1, 2005 08:16 PM

Aloha: (yawn) I actually started to nod off.

Lindsey: I liked her voice in the auditions. If she wants to go country she should try a Tanya Tucker song or maybe she should try something bluesy that will allow her smoky voice to shine.

Jessica: Nice. Didn't like her outfit, but the stylists can fix that.

Posted by: Jeannine at March 1, 2005 08:18 PM

Oh lord. Mikala really is Fran Dresher.

Posted by: Faith at March 1, 2005 08:20 PM

I really just don't like Mikala, and this performance isn't helping.

Posted by: Ian S. at March 1, 2005 08:21 PM

I can't understand a word Mikala is singing.

Posted by: Leslie at March 1, 2005 08:22 PM

Mikhala better learn to walk her dog. This girl just rubs me the wrong way. I disagree with the judges . . .she wasn't all that. Ok, but not great.

Posted by: Jeannine at March 1, 2005 08:23 PM

Okay, whoever is engineering this show totally has a vendetta against the girls. They are in complete competition to have their voices heard over the background music.

We are not hearing the same show that the judges and the live audience are hearing.

Posted by: Dakota Pundit at March 1, 2005 08:27 PM

I dunno - I think the girls mostly are picking songs where they can't belt it out with any amount of power. Jessica did, and she sounded fine.

Posted by: Ian S. at March 1, 2005 08:28 PM

Not that it matters much anyway. So far their performances have all been pretty dull.

Posted by: Dakota Pundit at March 1, 2005 08:28 PM

dakota -
I agree, I was wondering the same thing about the sound. don't know if its optimized for 5.1 or not.

and I've given up figuring this out - I thought mikaela was _horrible_...and they, even Simon, loved her.

Posted by: Rob at March 1, 2005 08:28 PM

If Celena were 150+ pounds, she wouldn't have lasted past the first round.

Posted by: JohnO at March 1, 2005 08:29 PM

How Madison Avenue of you JohnO

Posted by: Faith at March 1, 2005 08:30 PM

Which Spice Girl is this one?

Posted by: Dakota Pundit at March 1, 2005 08:32 PM

Nadia fucking rocks

Posted by: Faith at March 1, 2005 08:34 PM

Ooof. Nadia's my fave out of the girls, but that song did NOT show her voice off at all.

Posted by: Ian S. at March 1, 2005 08:34 PM

It's not that it's a bad choice of song, just not a great part FROM that song. Lot of "whoa, whoa, whoa's", not enough lyrics.

Posted by: JohnO at March 1, 2005 08:34 PM

Amanda is so karaoke tonite.

Posted by: Faith at March 1, 2005 08:37 PM

Exactly, Faith. That was 100% karaoke.

Posted by: Ian S. at March 1, 2005 08:38 PM

Woo Hoo Ian! We finally agreed on something. ;)

Posted by: Faith at March 1, 2005 08:39 PM

Celena - which one was that again?

Nadia - I didn't like the song, but I still think she's cool. Versatile.

Amanda - she did ok. I liked this week's performance better than last. What is it with the camisole tops tonight?

Posted by: Jeannine at March 1, 2005 08:42 PM

God, Janay is awful.

Posted by: Faith at March 1, 2005 08:45 PM

Omigod. I am agreeing with Simon. Janay looked scared shitless.

Posted by: JustLisa at March 1, 2005 08:46 PM

Simon was right on in his criticism of Janay. She needs to go home and grow up.

Posted by: Dakota Pundit at March 1, 2005 08:46 PM

I liked the unconventional song choice, but she didn't do it very well and that deer in the headlights look was in full effect.

Posted by: Ian S. at March 1, 2005 08:46 PM

Janay - eeeek! The outfit, the song - awful.

I liked Carrie's performance - maybe not her best, but it certainly didn't suck. She may only know this song as a country song as Faith Hill covered it many years ago on one of her albums.

Posted by: Jeannine at March 1, 2005 08:52 PM

Wow! I'm a Vonzell fan tonite.

Posted by: Faith at March 1, 2005 08:56 PM

The audio seems to have a real hard time picking up the softer vocals which causes every singer to ramp up the volume. It'd be nice if they could adjust it so we could hear the melodies.

Posted by: JohnO at March 1, 2005 08:56 PM

God. I just pinpointed what I don't like about Vonzell. She's all sharp edges and teeth. That song needs some softness to it.

And Michele, you're right. No one except Janis should sing Janis.

Posted by: kat at March 1, 2005 08:56 PM

I predict we'll be saying bu-bye to Celena and Janay tomorrow.

Posted by: Jeannine at March 1, 2005 09:01 PM

Gosh, I hope so. If I must sit through another one of Janay's performances I might have to shoot myself. Anyway, she's not that bad, but I feel so bad for her when she's up there. I feel like I have to cross my fingers (sometimes I can't even watch) because I'm just waiting for her to really really mess up and stop singing and she won't know what to do, and she'll start to cry, and oh my, it'd be horrible! Anyhow, I like Carrie and I like Nadia, Jessica is okay. I really do think that the boys are just so much stronger than the girls, I hope Anwar goes far.

Posted by: Mulder at March 1, 2005 09:13 PM

We're watching this back on TiVo right now and I just had Todd pause it after Mikalah so I could come and see what you thought of her. We HATED the performance. It was wretched. And then to hear the judges fawn all over her?!? I told Todd if you liked this, we needed to get on drugs. Thank heavens we're not the only ones that feel this way about her (and don't get me wrong, I love that personality...but the voice is worse than nails on chalkboard).

Posted by: robyn at March 1, 2005 10:30 PM

Wrong, wrong, wrong, Michele. Jessica kicked ass tonight. And as for Carrie, you and all three of the judges completely missed the point. I was surprised that she didn't defend herself--actually, the fact that she didn't might mean my interpretation is wrong, but I don't think so. I was with you all the way at the beginning of the song. I was thinking, oh God, don't try to sing Janis, but then I realized what she was doing. She turned it into a country song, and I thought that was brave and innovative. I thought it worked really well. But, what do I know?

Posted by: CraigC at March 2, 2005 01:36 AM

I was thinking the same thing - is it like this for anyone else? I feel like I'm struggling to hear them sing - like there's some sound problems in which the music is drowning out the vocals.

The sound mixer needs to be slapped because the background music was way. too. loud. As I was watching, I commented on it to my family and they couldn't help but agree with me. So, hey, Fox: Get a new sound mixer, 'cause he ain't doing his job.

Posted by: Nikki at March 2, 2005 12:21 PM

I can't believe you guys. I'm a total Mikalah fan and I hope she wins the competition. She may not have the strongest voice in the competition but she makes people want to watch her and that is what makes someone a star. Look at Jennifer Lopez and Brittney Spears-- terrible singers, but that have "it" whatever "it" is.

Posted by: Sophia at March 3, 2005 09:59 AM

Hope that's not how you choose your boyfriends, honey. Gonna be a tough going for you, then.

Posted by: michele at March 3, 2005 10:04 AM

I agree with you totally, Sophia. Mikala is the one to watch; she'll be the one to bring a tear to the eye. She emotes big time.

Posted by: charlotte at March 6, 2005 01:54 PM

I love Mikhala Gordon! She rocks big time, and I hope she wins the whole thing. Besides, she is a major hottie.
