Boys Night Out - 2/28
By Michele
The boys are back and we'll be here to diss and discuss.
10 guys left - Jared and Judd were the dearly departed last week.
Mario is up first and he's gonna boogie down.
This isn't a great song for him - doesn't show off any strengths except for his ability to shake his groove thang, which we already know he can do. Seems like he just wants to prove he's got the charisma thing going on - his voice sounds almost weak on this song. Bad Mario! (Not that he's likely to get voted off - but give yourself a challenge, Mario!) And of course, they all disagree with me.
--
Anwar - my fave - up now. Niiice song choice. He's got the GOODS. Listen to that voice.
Ok, I'm disqualifying myself from judging Anwar in future threads because I am completely and absolutely biased.
---
Simon is in a good mood tonight. He's downright jovial. Must have gotten some today.
---
Joseph Murena - my Long Island homie - is up. He's a wedding singer. Nuff said.
Though he is much better tonight than he was last week. He might have bought himself an extra week on the show.
Porteguese night club? No idea what that means, but it cracked me up.
---
David Brown, here to entertain you.
What? Oh, I'm awake, I swear. Was someone singing? I...uh..zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
--
Here's my boy Constantine. Yea, I know he's not really all that, but I still like him.
Oh lord, I HATE this song. Hate the Black Crowes.
Well, at least it's different than what anyone else has done, but he ain't carrying it off well. Run of the mill karaoke rocker. Which sucks, because he actually challenged himself and did something out of the ordinary, but I'm dissapointed. And go figure, the daring duo like him.
---
I'm pleading sinus infection tonight. I'm sure, thanks to a stuffed head, I'm hearing things differently than everyone else.
But I still think Constantine didn't pull that song off the way he should have. See Ian's comment.
---
Scott Savol's up..
He's all bling bling tonight. I want to really like him, but he just doesn't thrill me the way he did the first night I heard him.
I shoudl just give it up tonight. Nobody is agreeing with me. OR....maybe I'm right and you're ALL WRONG!
--
Travis up...totally playing the crowd. I still don't think he's finalist material, but he's showing me more tonight than he has in the past.
----
Nikko Smith coming your way. Wow. Daring choice. Not everyone can sing this.
And he does ok with it. Again, liked him more than I liked him in the past. Another one who just bought himself another week. Still not finalist material. I think Paula has a wet spot on her chair.
--
Anthony Federov - a favorite of Clay Aiken fans everywhere - singing for your listening pleasure. Your mileage on that may vary.
Jebus, he's killing Foreigner. So. Not. Feeling. This. And Foreigner? What a STUPID choice of songs. Ugh. Bad, all around.
You know what? It's not me, it's THEM. Paula and Randy are just idiots. I stand by my critiques.
I think Ian (in the comments) nailed why I didn't like that: I can't believe I'm typing this, but he's desecrating the memory of Foreigner. I had no idea that was possible.
--
Bo is up and WOW, interesting choice of songs. I wonder how many people in the audience have ever even heard this before? He's blowing his nemesis, Constantine, away tonight. Unfortunately, this is not American Idol type singing. Not the best rendition of this song, but I give him total props for going out on a limb like that. Bo just made me kick Constantine out of bed.
Wow. I really, really liked that and I've HATED Bo up until now. Color me surprised.
I think I'll be calling in for Bo tonight. Anwar doesn't need my votes.
I think Constantine is crying in a corner somewhere.
Tanya's critiques are over here...waiting to see what she thought of Bo.
For those who asked, Bo's song was Whipping Post by the Allman Brothers. One of my favorite songs.
Todd was not nearly as enthused about tonight's program as I was.
Here we go!!!!!

one of the best things about this show? The folks in the background with no rhythm clapping off the beat. Love it!
Posted by: Jennifer at February 28, 2005 08:05 PM
Joseph is not impressive to me. He looks like the kid from Iron Eagle. I love Anwar though.
Posted by: Jennifer at February 28, 2005 08:11 PM
Wow, I'm a huge Anwar fan, but I didn't like that at all. :(
Posted by: Faith at February 28, 2005 08:12 PM
Anwar is farking *flawless*.
Posted by: Ian S. at February 28, 2005 08:12 PM
He sounded great in Texas :) heh I hated Moon River last week. I love anwar though.
The guys on now is way to styled for me. I am not sure what it is about him I do not like. He can sing really well, but he looks like a backstreet boy or something.
Posted by: Jennifer at February 28, 2005 08:15 PM
Joseph sucks. Yuck.
Posted by: Faith at February 28, 2005 08:15 PM
IS it just me, or are the guys just much better than the girls?
Posted by: Jennifer at February 28, 2005 08:15 PM
Simon is nailing Joeseph to the wall. And I can't argue with him one bit.
Posted by: Ian S. at February 28, 2005 08:17 PM
I think Shanghai Opium Den has a better ring to it.
Posted by: Jennifer at February 28, 2005 08:19 PM
I think singing ballads is always a big mistake at this point. Especially because they always choose bad ones.
Posted by: Jennifer at February 28, 2005 08:22 PM
I like this song, but you have to be soulful to make it sound good and Constantine just...isn't.
Posted by: Ian S. at February 28, 2005 08:27 PM
Isn't that the truth? The second we hear that it's a another boring ballad, we are immediately underwhelmed.
Posted by: Leslie at February 28, 2005 08:27 PM
Wow Mich, could we disagree more tonite. You know I don't like Constantine, but I like the song and thought he did well.
Posted by: Faith at February 28, 2005 08:28 PM
I think Beau is definately the better vocalist. There really is no competition between the two rockers for talent. I love the Doby Grey cover from last week. Great song. My girls have have known the words to that song since there were toddlers. My six year old was belting it out with Beau last week. I hope he goes far
Posted by: Jennifer at February 28, 2005 08:31 PM
I love the Black Crowes, that song in particular and Constantine butchered it. Ick. Good for him for trying something more in his "style", but still . . . ick.
Posted by: Jeannine at February 28, 2005 08:36 PM
Scott's impressed me more in the past, but he's still very good - I'd put him in the top 5.
Posted by: Ian S. at February 28, 2005 08:37 PM
During Scott's performance I kept waiting for him to really bring it home, but he never got there. Close though.
Why does he look like the white version of Randy? Aren't they both wearing the same outfit?
Posted by: Leslie at February 28, 2005 08:37 PM
Bu-bye Scott!
Posted by: Faith at February 28, 2005 08:37 PM
Travis sucks. How did this guy get into the final twelve? ick.
Posted by: Jennifer at February 28, 2005 08:37 PM
Travis improved greatly over last week, but he still sucks.
Posted by: Ian S. at February 28, 2005 08:39 PM
I grew up in the 80s I think i have an aversion to that whole Lionel Ritchie phase.
Posted by: Jennifer at February 28, 2005 08:43 PM
obviously including Niko. He is blaspheming the name of Marvin Gaye. I need to hear Sexual Healing to cleanse out the demons.
Posted by: Jennifer at February 28, 2005 08:46 PM
Holy shit, Foreigner?
Posted by: Ian S. at February 28, 2005 08:48 PM
Bobby Brown? I can't believe Simon used the B word.
Posted by: Leslie at February 28, 2005 08:48 PM
Ok. For the record. No one should ever be able to sing a Foreigner song. EVER. He is killing me. At least he isn't murdering Juke Box Hero.
Posted by: Jennifer at February 28, 2005 08:48 PM
I can't believe I'm typing this, but he's desecrating the memory of Foreigner. I had no idea that was possible.
Posted by: Ian S. at February 28, 2005 08:50 PM
What? No fan of Hot Blooded? I love that time in music. At least you could understand what they were saying. He will get another week because he is like whitebread cute. The tweens will swoon.
Posted by: Jennifer at February 28, 2005 08:52 PM
Is it possible that I'm becoming a Bo fan?!?!?! Help me!
Posted by: Faith at February 28, 2005 08:55 PM
Bo was fantastic, a very close #2 behind Anwar.
Posted by: Ian S. at February 28, 2005 08:56 PM
Amen, Simon.
Posted by: Jennifer at February 28, 2005 08:57 PM
I'm shocked as well. Bo -- who would've thunk it?
With perhaps a couple of exceptions this night was pretty solid. Let's see the girls try to top this.
Posted by: Leslie at February 28, 2005 08:59 PM
Was that song by the Allman Brothers? I've never heard anyone but Frank Zappa sing it, and he absolutely did it justice. I was in awe. I loved it!!
Posted by: Tanya at February 28, 2005 09:06 PM
I have to say buh-bye to David and Constantine. I wasn't too thrilled with some of the other performances, but those two just didn't have it tonight. Last two guys will be Anwar and Mario...just a guess.
Posted by: ReaderMom at February 28, 2005 09:54 PM
Bo! Bo! Bo!
I still think Anwar is the favorite to win, but Bo was the performer of the evening. I had no idea he had that in him. Before tonight I couldn't care less about him, and now I want him in the top 12 at least.
Posted by: Doug at February 28, 2005 10:58 PM
I have loved Anwar from the beginning -- too cute and a voice that is unbelievable!!!! Bo really took me in this time as well. I placed many, many votes for them both!
Posted by: THW at February 28, 2005 11:53 PM
Bo was awesome last week and was more awesome this week. He blew me away---again! How anyone can think the cookie cutter crap that most of the other guys sang last night is better is beyond me. I didn't understand how the judges thought Federov was good--he butchered the song and either he or the backup singers were out of tune (I'm going with him being to blame). Bo deserves to win--he outsings and outperforms all the rest.
