the dead will walk the earth
In the past, when the Yanks lost to the Mets I would get pissed. The fan rivalry (as well as the rivarly within my mixed NY baseball team family) made it that way.
In the past, if the Sox reached first place with the Yanks trailing this many games behind, I'd be pissed. Or at least upset.
I just don't care anymore.
It's not like I'm a fair weather fan whose team is losing so she gives up. Not like that at all. It's the team that's given up.
How can I put my heart into rooting for a team that has no heart themselves? How can I get passionate about a team with no passion of their own? The Yanks are dishwater. Mediocrity. Watching them reminds me of going to a concert only to discover your favorite band is just going through the motions. You walk out displeased and every time you put their CDs on, you realize that your intense love for them has weakened, simply because they have weakened.
They haven't weakened in talent - look at that lineup. So what is it? Why are they playing as if nothing matters? Why does watching a Yankee game make me reach for the remote more often than not? Why can't I stir up any of the Yankee passion I've had since I was a little girl - passion that I had even in the worst years of the modern Yanks?
I care less and less that they are drowning in the standings and it's almost the All-Star break. I care less and less that the Sox are ahead of them. Normally on a summer day like this one, when they Yanks and Mets are playing, I'd have the tv hooked up in the backyard, beer on ice and the family coming over for some good natured fighting. At 4:05 today when the game starts, I'll be in a movie theater watching zombies.
Same difference, no?

But I think these are decent photos. You tell me. Also, I have video, but like a schmuck, I turned the camera on it's side and I have no video editing software. So we'll just have to wait on that.... [Read More]

I completely agree with you more. It feels like part of my soul has been taken from me (much like a zombie). The Red Sox taking over first place and seeing the Skanks solidly in the rear-view mirror would normally put a huge smile on my face.
Not this year.
The Skanks have no heart. No soul. It's like they've become a high-priced version of the Pirates. A team I couldn't give two shits about. And that's not what makes a rivalry great.

If their Staten Island minor league guys were not down the block, kids who you'll never catch going through the motions, it would be unbearable for me this summer. After getting hosed by the NHL, baseball was my last hope for fixing my 2005 sports jones. Now, after watching this train wreck of a season, I'm just amazed they are not double-digits in the dust of the AL East, fighting--and most likely losing--against Tampa Bay to avoid finishing dead last.
I'm so disgusted right now I can't even be bothered to rail at them and demand Darth Boss George start chopping heads. It's not that I don't care; it's just that--with this squad--you couldn't convince me it would do any good. Wang--a called up rookie--is the only starter I have anything resembling confidence in when handed the ball, and if those other four monkeys don't get their acts in gear, nothing DBG, Cashman or Torre can do will change the fact that considering how mind-bogglingly shitty they've played so far, they are lucky they haven't already been declared dead.

I agree wholeheartedly with Michele and TC's sentiments. The Sox are in first place - so what? They deserve it. When Schilling got injured they didn't decide to just mail it in.
I've been a Yankee fan since 1940 and I've exulted and agonized with Yankee teams over the years. I've rooted for teams with far less talent and far worse records than this one, but they fought, scrapped, and played their hearts out. This Yankee team comes awake every once in a while and pounds some unlucky team into the ground and then goes right back to sleep. They just don't give a damn. There's no excuse for veterans like Mussina, Johnson, and Pavano to throw one gopher ball after another. I'm not getting excited by any more six game winning streaks because they'll just follow it with another losing streak. If they don't do some sensible rebuilding at the end of this season it may not be any better next year.
