The Good, The Bad and the (Very) Ugly, Friday Edition. [updated]

The good: A-Rod finally makes a play worth writing about. Except it happened off the field.

Rodriguez risked his life Wednesday to save an 8-year-old boy from getting hit by a fast-moving truck on Newbury Street, the boy's father, Joe McCarthy, said last night.[...]Rodriguez said he was about to enter a car when he noticed a truck heading in his direction and quickly decided to step back to protect himself. When he turned around, he saw young Patrick running into the street and directly toward the utility truck. A-Rod said he acted instinctivelyduring the lunchtime incident, grabbing the boy and pulling him back with him.

Also good: Matsui goes 3 for 4, with 3 RBIs. Three 2-out RBIs, an accomplishment for these Yanks. Sheffield, 3 for 4. Johnson had 9 Ks.

The bad: 12 men LOB. That's TWELVE. Season high, so far. Seven left in scoring position with two out. Also, obviously, they LOST. After dramatically tying the game up, no less. Johnson gave up three home runs. Five earned runs in five innings. And Tom Gordon. Ugh. Tom Gordon.

The ugly: See, Sheffield.

More on the Sheff thing here, here. And the Boston Dirt Dogs are furious, but not at Sheffield:
This is what happens when Red Sox Nation "cardholders," who don't know enough to keep their hands in the stands, go to games instead of real baseball fans, who can't get tickets to Fenway anymore. Sheff should have clocked the assclown who, even if Sox fanboys and girls blindly give the punk the benefit of the doubt, was trying to turn Tek's triple into a double at best. Inexcusable. Ban him from Fenway for two years.

Update: Here's my complete take on the situation, originally posted at ASV:

My thoughts? Sheffield should have clocked the idiot. The jerk wasn't grabbing for the ball (which is a really jerkass move when your team is the one hitting, anyhow); he was clearly taking a swipe at Sheff. Watch the video at MLB.com a few times and tell me you don't come away with the same conclusion.

Kudos to the Boston fans for pointing the asswipe out right away, and to Sheffield for showing incredible restraint.

Suspened? Hell, he should be lauded for not jumping into the stands and pummeling the jackass.

Even if he wasn't taking a swipe at Sheffield, but just trying to distract him, he's still a jerk. And there are jerks like him in every single park, stadium and arena; people who think that having a ticket to a game entitles them some sort of no-fault behavior law, where they can act like freaking animals, interfere in the game, heckle to the point of ruining the game for every fan around them and just be complete assholes. It's not a Sox-Yankee rivalry thing. It's not even a Sox fan thing. It's just the nature of some people to be jackasses.

I'm with the Dirt Dogs, totally.

ESPN was insinuating that the guy took a shot at Sheffield. Having watched the video about 10 times now, I think he was going for the ball, which is still inexcusable. Sheffield deserves credit for maintaining his composure and walking away.

The fan should have been arrested for attempting to interfere with play on the field.

"Big Unit Asshole" Johnson and Gordon are gonna end up costing me a TV if they keep this crap up. Besides the LOB season high, I set a season high myself last night: five empty beer cans tossed at the screen. Sooner or later, I'm flinging an ashtray. Johnson gets bailed out by the bats, and he gives it right back. And screw Gordon, give the ball to Felix Rodriguez instead.

The Dirt Dogs are right; there is no excuse at all for a fan pulling that crap. Busted and banned for the season, period. He may have initially been going for the ball, but he ended up swinging an uppercut that connected. The NY tabloid's sports hacks each had a monkey who tried to make this out as another episode in the Yank/Sox rivalry, lining it up with the bullpen brawl from the 2003 ALCS, but that's bullshit. It's another example of goddamn assholes thinking a ticket gives them freedom to be dicks. Sheff probably faces a suspension of some sort, so that fan should face some sort of penalty, too.

Credit to Scheff for keeping his cool, and to the Boston security guard that jumped right in and to the other fans who didn't let a dicey situation turn into a mess. The fan was trying to distract Gary and may have inadvertantly made contact with him, not the biggest crime ever against a player on the field, but not the smartest move either. Luckily, things didn't get really ugly (like at Auburn Hills Michigan a coupla months back). I think these two teams and their fans are ready for a break now for awhile.

I'll go one better than my Dogs. Ban this fucktard for life.

My wife pointed out that the beer got spilled a little 'suspiciously' as well.

I'll NEVER be confused with someone who even remotely likes the Juice Guy in right field but I do have a little more respect for him this morning.

The beer guy was more obvious than the swipe / uppercut / going for ball / whatever that clown was trying to achieve. The beer guy very clearly dumped his beer on Shef, IMO.

Chris House, the dirtbag that hit Sheffield should have his face plastered all over with the words "Douchebag" written underneath. As for all the lying dogs trying to cover up what happened, they should be banned from ever coming out in public again. Bunch of grown men showing up at a ballpark and hitting the players. Surprisingly, Johnny Damon earned some props from me for being very sympathetic and defending Sheffield. And again, I spit on Francona.

How about those 12 LOB?

The good news: The "law of averages" dictates that those stranded baserunners eventually will be converted to runs, and that the nonexistent clutch hitting will reverse itself.

I hate "math," but find myself taking refuge in it at this point in the seasons.

I missed the guy who doused beer on Sheff. I think the guy took a swipe like the other morons in right field who were lazily motioning towards a ball some 7 feet away. (Yes, I called them morons... they looked like morons by waving at the ball like that). This guy should not be able to go back to Fenway this year. Beyond this year, I dunno. Sheff shouldn't be suspended IMO but I wouldnt object too much to a game or 2. Beyond that is excessive.

After rewinding it more times than zapruder, I saw it. What a dick. He should be banned for the season too, at least.

Posted by: h0mi at April 15, 2005 11:17 PM

The guy who hit Sheffield and the guy who threw beer, I think, are banned from attending Fenway Park games for the rest of the season and had to hand over their season tickets.
