This Day in Yankee History
1989 Hoping to replace the injured Dave Winfield, the Yankees trade catcher Joel Skinner and a minor leaguer to the Indians for outfielder Mel Hall. The future Hall of Fame outfielder will miss the entire season due to back surgery.THIS is when Boss George became DARTH Boss George.
(if Winnie isn't the pefect "you've gone over to the Dark Side, Boss" I don't know who is. Not being allowed to just damn shoot Winfield put Boss George right the hell over the line...I mean, even Billy and Reggie didn't make him as nuts as dealing with "Mr. May" did (see snivelling little Howard Spira).
According to the Daily News, a "source" said Winfield offered to wear a Yankees cap to Cooperstown if the Bombers matched the Padres' package. But Steinbrenner "is said to have replied, 'If you want to go in the Hall of Fame as a Yankee, then go in as a Yankee. We're not paying you.'"Damn straight, skippy!
I'm guessing The Boss himself supplied that information.
