29 Reasons Why The Movie Industry is Losing Money

It's not the piracy of movies by the public. It's the piracy of movies by the industry.

All of these upcoming movies (2005/2006) are either remakes or sequels:

  1. Cabinet of Dr. Caligari
  2. Underworld: Evolution
  3. Big Momma's House 2
  4. Stargate SG-1: The Alliance
  5. Cutting Edge 2, The
  6. Bambi II
  7. Pink Panther, The
  8. Net 2.0, The
  9. Cheating Death: Final Destination 3
  10. Basic Instinct 2: Risk Addiction
  11. Hills Have Eyes, The
  12. Shaggy Dog, The
  13. Scary Movie 4
  14. Mission: Impossible III
  15. Poseidon
  16. X-Men 3
  17. Omen 666, The
  18. Charlotte's Web
  19. Superman Returns
  20. Evan Almighty
  21. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest
  22. Garfield 2
  23. Brother Bear II
  24. Untitled Texas Chainsaw Massacre Prequel
  25. Casino Royale
  26. Grudge 2, The
  27. Santa Clause 3, The
  28. Fox and the Hound II
  29. Sunset Boulevard

No one is going to the movies because the movies they are making either suck or are fall into the been there, done that category. I mean, is there really a need for Cutting Edge 2? What kind of "creative" mind thinks this is a good idea? Who is going to pay to see that?

Yes, there are movies I am looking forward to:

Grandma's Boy
Star Party
Chinjeolhan geumjassi
Little One, The
Notorious Bettie Page, The
Hills Have Eyes, The

IMDB links for all these movies here.

Untitled Texas Chainsaw Massacre Prequel. They should keep that name. Hope it's a "good" as the remake.

Seriously...do we need a scary movie 4 or a mission impossible 3. and did enough people see The Net or Underworld to warrent sequels.

With movies like Garfield 2 coming out, how could Hollywood POSSIBLY be losing money?

Well, I think that the comic book movies work well as a serries, and I think Pirates could too.

Was the first Indiana Jones movie so perfect that a sequel would spoil it? Action adventure movie can be great fodder for sequels. Could suck, but I don't think you can dismiss them out of hand.

It's not about whether the movies are going to suck or not. I'm looking forward to the Pirates sequel.

It's about originality. New ideas. Even all the horror movies I'm looking forward to seem to be rehashes of old ideas.

Hating to sound like a browncoat, but "Serenity" is opening soon, as is "MirrorMask".

Big Momma's House 2??!! I can hardly wait!

The Pirates sequel, Stargate SG-1: The Alliance, and X-Men 3 are the only ones that I must see.

Other than those, yeah, Hollywood is dry.

Big Momma's House 2??!! I can hardly wait!

The Pirates sequel and X-Men 3 are the only ones that I must see. Stargate SG-1: The Alliance is a video game, btw.

Other than those, yeah, Hollywood is dry.

Whoops, sorry about the dupes.

Even worse than sequels....a feature length Miami Vice.

And I have a really bad feeling that Ghost Rider is going to make the Punisher look like a great comic book based film...sadly I'm talking about the Dolph Lundgren version.

Ahhh, I forgot Mirror Mask! I am SO looking forward to that.

Ghost Rider is going to be HORRIBLE. So is V for Vendetta. They should just stop making comic book movies.

And the same goes for the music industry and the shit coming out of there. It ain't the music sharing...

Oh is there a Mission Impossible III coming out? Cool and of course X-Men 3 is a must see. Do we really need Garfield 2 or Bambi 2?

and let's not forget "Venom".. or ok maybe we can somehow forget a straight rip-off of "Pet Sematery" and it's crapass sequel, "Pet Sematery 2".

It's not just movies... i don't listen to the radio much but whenever i do, it seems i hear a cover song. Or one of the endless bands that has a singer that sounds suspiciously like the bastard offspring of Eddie Vedder & that guy from STP.

One thing that I totally dispise is the anti-piracy commercials they are putting on DVDs. Hey, Morons! I'm not your target audience! The disk it is on is a bought (or rented)legal copy. Why are you subjecting me to the freaking ad! It makes me wish I just downloaded the stupid movie. I would have saved the $20 (or $5 rental) and I wouldn't have to watch the stupid ad!

BAMBI 2?
BAMBI 2?????????????

DIE EISNER DIE DIE DIE!!!!!!!!!!!

No one should be touching the Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. Remake or do sequels to all those others, but do not touch the cabinet.
Do we have to put child lock on it?
I guess it could be remade well, by someone who cares about the film deeply, but what are the odds of Hollywood doing that?

Bambi 2: The Reckoning?
Bambi 2: Judgment Day?

Looks like more straight-to-video schlock from Disney.

I'll give you another reason that has nothing to do with product. People in movie theaters won't shut the fuck up. So, why should I pay $9 to hear other people yammer?

Im willing to give X-Men 3 a chance. The first two were pretty good.

I don't know how SG-1:Alliance got up there, but that's a video game, not a movie.

Remakes/sequels can be cool, but I look at a great deal of the movies and think "Haven't we suffered enough?" -- I mean, Scary Movie 4? Mission: Impossible III? Hasn't the TV series suffered enough from these horrible James Bond-wannabe movies? The Santa Clause 3 -- wasn't 2 straight to video, or did I just miss its spectacular box-office run?

Ghost Rider is going to be HORRIBLE. So is V for Vendetta. They should just stop making comic book movies.

Oh, no, no, no, no! Marvel just got funding to do movies of 10 of their greatest characters/groups: Captain America, Nick Fury, Dr. Strange, Hawkeye, Power Pack, Cloak and Dagger, the Avengers, Shang-Chi, Black Panther and Ant Man!!

ANT MAN! How could it get any better??

(Seriously, I am so there for Poultrygeist. Thanks for that.)

I was going to question Bambi 2 in particular, but Laurence beat me to it, and did a better job than I probably would have. [Bambi 2? BAMBI 2 BAMBI 4%*#^$ 2?]

Even the "original" movies are stripped from between the covers of a book ("Harry Potter", "Lord of the Rings", the upcoming Narnia, "The Constant Gardener", "The Fantastic Four" (if comic books are permitted to count here),"Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants"). Even combinations of the above apply - "War of the Worlds", "Pride and Prejudince", and "The Amityville Horror" were remakes and taken (in some cases rather loosely) from books.

I tried hard to think of a recent movie that I'd seen that didn't fit the pattern, and so far all I could come up with was "March of the Penguins" and "Revenge of the Sith", and "Sith" only counts because I wasn't talking about sequels here, only remakes and books.

I'm actually plannying to go see X-Men 3 and the next Pirates of the Carribean movies. Can't say I care about the rest of them, though.

Bambi 2:Judgement Day!!! I would love to see that. Bambi sneeking into the suburbs and killing anything on two legs.

It would be one thing if they put out bad movies and then charged 3 or 4 bucks to go see them, but with the cost of movies now, not even including what they charge for a box of popcorn, etc it has to be something really good for me to want to spend money on a movie now, otherwise, I just Netflix it. It cost me over $30 to go see 'Sith' for 2 tickets, popcorn and drinks. Ridiculous.

Guys, I think you all misread my point. I'm not saying sequels in and of themselves are bad, I'm just saying that a good portion of movies coming out in the next year or so are NOT original ideas.

Personally, I'm waiting for Bambi 2: Electric Bugaloo.

Trick or Treat? They're remaking that Ozzy Osbourne/Vince Neill movie?

Oops I mean Gene Simmons.. i got my 80s metal gods/wannabe actors mixed up.

I don't think I missed the point, I was just trying to come up with an originally scripted movie I'd seen recently (and rather failing, I fear).

Bambi 2: The Dukes of Hazzard have a Barbecue. Or should that be "Bambicue"?

When I lived and worked in Hollywood, I used to get excited about many of the projects listed in the Hollywood Reporter. Then, they would either never make it into final production, or the film would end up being a complete disappointment.

I had a producer friend who would buy wonderful properties and then put some stupid Hollywood spin on them. He was more of a fast-talking con artist than an artistic filmmaker. His movies always turned out horrible -- I wish I could name them without getting in trouble. But, he made lots of money and kept working and working.

These are actual movies?

I am hoping Superman is worth seeing.

I'll give Basic Instinct a chance, depends on the writing.

I don't know if these have been mentioned yet, but Rocky 6 and Police Academy 8 are heading into production.

Fritz, is your friend named Uwe Boll?

Police Academy 8

/falls down dead

Poultrygeist: Attack of the Chicken Zombies!???

LOL! can't wait.

They're making Stargate SG-1 movie! Awesome, I love the show, but I didn't much care for the original movie.

not to mention the TV shows being turned into movies.

Bambi 2: The Ted Nugent Collection.

I'm really looking forward to King Kong. Remake, but made by someone who has demonstrated the capability of making really good movies when he loves the subject.

The other ones are Narnia (which they keep advertising as Disney, which completely misses WETA, the people who made the Lord of the Rings so freakin' pretty), and Serenity.

And I'm really surprised nobody's mentioned Bambi Meets Godzilla.

The list I went off of was mostly releases for 2006, so I didn't include King Kong (which I like the preview for) or Narnia (which I am awaiting anxiously).

Screw sequels, most of the movies comig out just plain suck, period. And they try to come up with all these other reasons, like ticket prices and gas prices. No, your movies are shit. That's why people aren't going to see them. Make something decent and people will go see movies again, goddamn Hollywood idiots.

There is also the fourth Harry Potter movie, which is a sequel and will deservedly make money. But then, subsequent episodes in a series are a little different from pure sequels.

There's also a Will Ferrell Curious George movie coming out next year, which mercifully is animated.

You know in your heart that "Manimal: The Movie" is only a matter of time.
