listomatic: summer songs

[Not just songs ABOUT summer, but songs that remind you of certain summers or songs that are perfect for a fast drive to the beach]

  • Dirty Black Summer - Danzig
  • Summertime - Sublime
  • You're My Everything- Andy Gibb (because I got really sunburned one year while I was listening to this song on cassette over and over again while lounging in the pool)
  • Ice Cream Man - Van Halen
  • I Go Swimming - Peter Gabriel
  • Synchronicity - The Police (Summer of '83 - I could write a novel about that one)
  • Do You Feel Like We Do - Peter Frampton
  • Fourth of July - Soundgarden
  • Hotel California - Eagles (I hate this song, but it always reminds me of sticky, hot and humid summer days)
  • Guns n Roses - Mr. Brownstone (oh man, that day the soda exploded in my car....)
  • Bananarama - Cruel Summer
  • Don't Fear the Reaper - Blue Oyster Cult (this was a favorite night cruising song)
  • Afternoon Delight - Starland Vocal Band
  • Beach Baby - Beach Boys
  • More than a Feeling - Boston (left the 8 track out in the summer sun)
  • Air Conditioned Nightmare - Mr. Bungle
  • Surf Wax America - Weezer
  • Be Quiet and Drive - Deftones
  • Brand New - Soco Amaretto Lime
  • Rock This Town - Stray Cats
  • Love Shack - B52s
  • Blister in the Sun - Violent Femmes
  • Jessica - Allman Brothers (I don't think there is a song that exists that says "summer" to me more than this one)
  • Swing, Swing - All American Rejects
  • Rockaway Beach - Ramones

And, yes -

  • Freebird - Lynyrd Skynyrd (the soundtrack to at least two summers of my life)

There's so much more, but lunch hour calls and I'm sure you all will fill in the blanks with your favorites.

Summer in the City - Lovin Spoonful

Summertime Blues - The Who

Under the Boardwalk - The Drifters

Pretty much anything from the Steve Miller Band's Greatest Hits record. Every high school graduation party I attended in the summer of '93(!) played that album at some point. Just dreadful.

I'm gonna feel bad about admiting this, but Nat King Cole songs make me remember summer. Probably because of "Those Lazy Hazy Crazy Days Of Summer". My dad used to listen to him a lot and it always springs to mind.

Nothing like White Zombie's "Astro-Creep 2000" to take me back to that halcyon summer of 1995.

For me, the entire Black Album and ...And Justice For All. I met a friend, who introduced me to Metallica, two days before the school year started. I spent most friday-sat-sun-monday's at his place, listening to Metallica, reading comics, and watching crappy action movies.

He owned more movies than the local block buster. There's not a Dulf Lundrin (sp?) movie up to that point that we didn't watch 3 times.

Wipeout-The Surfaris
I Get Around; Surfin USA; Fun, Fun, Fun-Beach Boys
59th Street Song-Simon & Garfunkel
Boys of Summer-Don Henley
And that song "Boys watch the girls while the girls watch the boys..."-by somebody

Summer Song or Surfing with the Alien by Joe Satriani - great driving music.
Rocket Queen - Guns and Roses

A great summer album - Def Leppard's Hysteria from the summer of 1987.

Even though I hate the song now, "Walking on Sunshine" always did it for me. And James Taylor's "Mexico". And Donna Summer's "Last Dance". I can see those flowing linen skirts twirling SO clearly in my mind!

BTW, Michele, did you mean Syncronicity I or II, or the whole album ?

Mt own Summer- deftones, I've spent just about every summer since that album came out driving around to that song on repeat.

Beyond the sea, Bobby Darin, Love that song!

Dock of the Bay, good when your crusin'by the shore at sunset(or sunrise)

Summer Breeze, Type O-

At the risk of carbon dating myself, Neil Young's "Zuma", especially "Cortez the Killer", and "Pardon My Heart".

Funny- Jonathan Richman, "That Summer Feeling" started playing on shuffle as I read the entry.

I will add: Len, "Steal My Sunshine,"

Beautiful Girls; Van halen
Love Rollercoaster; Ohio Players
Jungle Love; Steve Miller

What, no School's Out?

One glaring omission: you forgot Frank Sinatra's Summer Wind.

Don't remember the year (92?), but I do remember one summer I couldn't escape Kris Kross' "Jump" no matter how hard I tried.

Some o' dem try ta rhyme, but dey can't rhyme like dis...

No Brainer: "Rockaway Beach"

OMFG. Bill and Taffy Danoff, D.C.'s eternal shame.

Most anything by the Beach Boys works.

The west coast has the sunshine/ And the girls all get so tanned/
I dig a french bikini on hawaii island/ Dolls by a palm tree in the sand

Song after song, really no other group exudes Summer anywhere near like the Beach Boys.

I have to also mention Sailing by Christopher Cross; a classic.

Anything from Jefferson Starship's Modern Times album, while cruising Riverside during summer nights with my big brother in his Chevy Impala Super Sport, after a good meal at Naugles. Doesn't get any better than that.

Anything by The Beach Boys.

Pablo Cruise. I know they were Beach Boys meets Jimmy Buffett meets Journey, but there was a great summer day helping a friend move into her first apartment and A Place in the Sun just blasted over and over and over again while a bunch of us hauled furniture, painted, drank beer and ate pizza...in that order...don't ask.

The Breeders - Saints

Crank it up in your car with the windows down at a high rate of speed. Summer is ready when you are....................

I just made a list on my player today named "happy summery." It includes:

Lostprophets: Last Summer
Rancid: Red Hot Moon

"In the Summertime" by Mungo Jerry
Ch...ch-ch (UH!) Ch...ch-ch (UH!)
In the summertime
when the weather is high
you can stretch right up
an' touch the sky
when the weather's fine
you got women
you got women on your mind.

"Sunny Afternoon" by the Kinks
And I love to live so pleasantly
live this life of luxury:
lazing on a sunny afternoon
in Summertime
in summertime

You mean Dirty Black Summer by Danzig, right? I just wouldn't want Glenn to accidentally stumble on to that and go into a shirtless rage.

Summer of '92, I get Angel Dust, La Sexorcisto and Vulgar Display of Power all at the same time. It may be the greatest convergence of albums-in-the-same-year of all time.

Bonus points to Pere Ubu's "Sleep Walk" as one of my summer faves, Cracker's "Happy Birthday to Me" and TMBG's "See the Constellation" -- got Apollo 18 for my birthday in July '93 and never stopped listening to it.

In '95 Pere Ubu, They Might Be Giants, the Violent Femmes and Cracker all played a kickass show on the same bill. It all comes together three years ago when, on a summer bus tour of Europe, we're forced to listen to "Blister in the Sun" every morning as our "wake-up" song as soon as we get on the bus.

8 am every other day, after drinking til 4 ever night, we get blasted with Blister before we're allowed to mercifully go back to sleep on the bus.

Cruel, but I'll never think of summer without it.

If Crakcer's CD was out, so was Sugar's Copper Blue. Between those two, I tried to drown out everything else. And came close to doing it.

Copper Blue singlehandedly turned me back on to music, which I had lost interest in when Husker Du broke up.

Hi. Never been here before - linked from Christie's place. Nice to see more married people with kids who like good music and comics on the Net :)

Currently listening to the new Gorillaz album and its definitely something that would work well at poolside party in summer.

You mean Dirty Black Summer by Danzig, right?

Yea, I actually had another song there, put in Danzig's and mixed the two up.

I could kick Glenn's ass, anyhow.

For a drive on brilliant summer's day:

LL Cool J - Phenomenon
Blondie - Denis
Beastie Boys - Gratitude
Jane's Addiction - Been Caught Stealin'
Public Enemy - Fight The Power
Joss Stone - Super Duper Love
QOTSA - Feel Good Hit Of The Summer
Ash - Shining Light
Kaiser Chiefs - I Predict A Riot
George Michael - Faith
Fatboy Slim - Gangster Trippin'
Emiliana Torrini - Sunny Road
Commodores - Easy
Van Halen - Little Guitars
Dogs Die Hot Cars - I Love You Cause ...
Donna Summer - I Feel Love

I could kick Glenn's ass, anyhow.

None of us ever had any doubt. We just weren't anxious to see Glenn shirtless for any reason.

I could kick Glenn's ass, anyhow.
Presented without comment.

Beach Baby was actually recorded by the group 'First Class'

"Their hit, "Beach Baby", was an inspirred bit of Beach Boys pastiche that sounded great on the radio in 1974."

Summer Wind Was Always Our Song - The Ataris
Pour Some Sugar On Me - Def Leppard (don't ask... just don't)
Anything from 2 Live Crew's "As Nasty As The Wanna Be"
The Gambler - Kenny Rogers ("On a Warm Summer's Evening... on a train bound for nowhere!)

oh so many more...

I can't believe that noone even mentioned "Summer Breeze" - Seals & Crofts...bad ass soft rock jam! There's a few guitar licks in there that just always stick in my head.
