comedy madness
MSNBC has an NCAA style comedy movie tournament.
I was disappointed in some of the inclusions/omissions (Vacation, but not Christmas Vacation?), but overall it was a decent selection of 64.
My Final Four:
Big Lebowski, Caddyshack, Holy Grail and Spinal Tap
I haven't decided on the winner yet.
What does your Final Four look like?
Comments
I call bullshit on the selection committee!
Pitting Ferris vs. Arizona and Caddyshack vs Blues Bros in the first round?
My final four is:
Raising Arizona
Stripes
Princess Bride
Holy Grail
The Grrrrrrrail wins in a walk.
Posted by: Matt | April 6, 2005 07:48 AM
South Park, Austin Powers, Office Space & the Grail
Posted by: JohnO | April 6, 2005 07:49 AM
Final Four:
Dumb & Dumber, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Animal House and Office Space.
I'm dumbfounded as to how "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad World" didn't make the tournament.
Posted by: Ed | April 6, 2005 07:54 AM
South Park, Groundhog Day, The Producers and High Fidelity, with South Park clobbering The Producers in the finals by 28 points. Because it's that funny.
Posted by: William Young | April 6, 2005 07:57 AM
Not one classic comedy? Marx Brothers, Martin and Lewis, Abbot and Costello, Hope and Crosby,... all absent.
Duck Soup would give Holy Grail a run for its money and A Night at the Opera should be there just for the stateroom scene. Duck Soup is certainly funnier than Spinal Tap or Stripes (and I like Stripes.) Hell any of the Road movies by Hope and Crosby are funnier than Spinal Tap.

Ferris Bueller
Animal House
Princess Bride
Holy Grail
Grail over House in the final.
Posted by: Chris | April 6, 2005 08:25 AM
Raising Arizona
Tommy Boy
Princess Bride
Holy Grail
It was hard especially the second round princess bride -office space matchup but the winner goes to...
Princess Bride
Inconceivable!
You keep using that word and I don't think you know what it means....
Posted by: Rusty | April 6, 2005 08:26 AM
Top Secret didn't get mentioned? :(
There's a ton of good selections, I dunno if I could pick 4, let alone a single winner better than all the rest. But Shaun of the Dead would probably be in or very near the final 4.
Posted by: Josh | April 6, 2005 08:53 AM
Someone has to tell these assholes how to do a first round bracket. Caddyshack v Blues Brothers? Young Frankenstein v Holy Grail? That's like having two #1s(or 2s) meet in the first round NCAA.
If the bracket was setup more intelligently, we'd have better choices
Anyway:
Space Balls, Animal House, Office Space, Young Frankenstein
Posted by: Russ | April 6, 2005 08:59 AM
There's Something About Mary, CaddyShack, Office Space, and Holy Grail.
Where was How to Murder Your Wife, or the Seven Year Itch? Those are way more sophisticated than When Harry Met Sally. And forgive me for saying so but I think Woody Allen was grossly underrepresented. How come they didn't have "Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Sex"?
Posted by: prairie biker | April 6, 2005 09:01 AM
In true tournament form, I first bitched about how the seedings went and how the brackets were set up. I mean, c'mon... a first round fight between Office Space and Election? Holy Grail vs. Young Frankenstein? These are sweet sixteen matchups! Damn the committee!
Anyway,
Raising Arizona
Stripes
Office Space
Airplane
Airplane takes it over Raising Arizona in triple overtime.

Caddyshack vs. Blues Brothers is a killer.
Final Four action:
South Park vs. Stripes
Bull Durham vs. Holy Grail
South Park vs. Holy Grail in the final
Holy Grail wins it all
Posted by: Scott | April 6, 2005 09:14 AM
South Park
Ghostbusters
Princess Bride
Holy Grail

Final Four
South Park vs Austin Powers
Office Space vs Holy Grail
Finals
South Park vs Holy Grail
Winna!
Holy Grail
Posted by: Mob | April 6, 2005 09:25 AM
Raising Arizona
Animal House
Holy Grail
Christmas Story (my upset pick)
Holy Grail over Animal House
Posted by: Shawn | April 6, 2005 09:43 AM
Shaun of the Dead narrowly beat Blues Brothers to take on Dr. Strangelove, who edged out Spinal Tap. Strangelove had an easier time in the finals and came out on top.
Posted by: Andrew Duncalfe | April 6, 2005 09:46 AM
Final Four :
Ferris Bueller
Animal House
Fast Times
Holy Grail
(Note: The SNL Alumni and Classic Regions were tough calls)
Finals:
Animal House over Holy Grail
Posted by: John | April 6, 2005 09:51 AM
Raising Arizona
Stripes
Princess Bride
Dr Strangelove
Dr Strangelove because I work on that Air Force Base now and it's even funnier...and scarier.
Posted by: Timmer | April 6, 2005 09:57 AM
Big Lebowski
Blues brothers
Office Space
Blazing Saddles
Posted by: billhedrick | April 6, 2005 10:01 AM
My picks were more for replay value than anything else: what would make me laugh consistently after the fiftieth viewing. That said, most of my picks will be viewed as sacrilege.
I also call bullshit for some of the first round match-ups. Holy Grail vs. Young Frankenstein?
I'm not quite sure how my final four ended up the way it did.
Ferris Bueller vs. Tommy Boy (I know, I know)
High Fidelity (sentimental favorite) vs. Philadelphia Story (3 greatest actors ever)
Posted by: Dave | April 6, 2005 10:17 AM
Final Four:
Spaceballs vs. Stripes
Princess Bride vs. The Jerk
Let me 'splain -- no no, is too much, let me sum up -- Princess Bride takes it all.
Obligatory wonk: I'd have "Bringing Up Baby" in the Classic category, Katherine Hepburn's performance is hysterical!
Posted by: Analog Mouse | April 6, 2005 10:38 AM
The Smart and Classic brackets were the ones that gave me fits of indecision:
Raising Arizona, Animal House, Princess Bride and Annie Hall
Posted by: LDH | April 6, 2005 10:41 AM
Lots of tough calls, but some were based on rep as I never saw them. Anyway the Final Four:
Naked Gun (beat out Ferris Bueller by a nose)
Space Balls (the weakest Division IMO)
Ghostbusters (over Animal House, the Toughest Div)
Princess Bride (over Bull Durham)
Holy Grail (just over Dr. Strangelove, another tough one)
Ghostbusters over Naked Gun and Holy Grail over Princess Bride, with Holy Grail taking the prize. I guess I like medieval settings.
I though Young Frankenstine got one of the toughest first round fights. If it would have been lower in the bracket it would have made the Sweet 16 (same goes for Raising Arizona).
Posted by: lplimac | April 6, 2005 11:09 AM
Final 4:
Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Caddyshack
Princess Bride
Holy Grail
Posted by: Pietro | April 6, 2005 11:19 AM
The inclusion of an entire bracket of SNL alumni entries massively diluted the quality of the field, and there were some ridiculous first-round matchups like Thin Man vs. Strangelove and Frankentstein vs. Grail. My biggest gripe is that a comedy competition without a single entry from Carole Lombard is bogus on its face. Notable exclusions that make the inclusion of Tommy Boy go far beyond the pale: My Man Godfrey, Heathers, The War Of The Roses, Prizzi's Honor.
Nevertheless, here's my final four:
Raising Arizona
Groundhog Day
His Girl Friday
Bull Durham
With His Girl Friday winning it all. Cary Grant doesn't get nearly enough credit for being a great actor and a comic genius, imo.
Posted by: MikeR | April 6, 2005 11:51 AM
Groundhog Day
The Producers
Dr. Strangelove
Then I was torn... The Thin Man or Animal House?
I am leaning towards Animal House.
Posted by: Bruce | April 6, 2005 11:51 AM
Yeah! Where are the road movies? Where are Abbott and Costello? What about the incredible unmatchable Marx Brothers? This contest was developed by a child!
Posted by: Bruce | April 6, 2005 11:54 AM
My choices:
http://www.ultimateinsult.net/images/comedy.JPG
My final choice scared me, but I'm being honest here.
Posted by: Scott | April 6, 2005 12:15 PM
It's rough having Office Space and The Princess Bride square off in the second round. they would both be Final Four picks, in my humble opinion.
Posted by: Hal | April 6, 2005 12:25 PM
Raising Arizona
Auston Powers
Christmas Story
Airplane
Raising Arizona edges Airplane
Glen: Say that reminds me, how'd you get that kid so darn fast? Me and Dot went in to adopt on account a' somethin' went wrong with my semen, and they said we had to wait five years for a healthy white baby. I said, "Healthy white baby? Five years? What else you got?" Said they got two Koreans and a Negro born with his heart on the outside. It's a crazy world.
H.I. McDunnough: Someone oughta sell tickets.
Glen: Sure, I'd buy one.
Posted by: JasonM | April 6, 2005 12:30 PM
Princess Bride
Holy Grail
Blues Brothers
South Park
Choosing between Holy Grail and Blazing Saddles was my toughest choice. Ni!
Posted by: Jon | April 6, 2005 12:48 PM
Extremely bogus seeding, yes.
Robbed of a berth: Heathers, Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, at least one by the Marx Brothers, Foul Play (to name one from each bracket).
Final Four: Ferris Beuller, Groundhog Day, Princess Bride, Airplane.
Princess Bride over Groundhog Day in the final.
Posted by: Jeff R | April 6, 2005 12:55 PM
Let's get the selection bashing out of the way:
No Mad,Mad,Mad World ? Team America? Detroit Rock City? Kentucky Fried Movie? My Goodness, you could have had a Zucker Brothers bracket instead of SNL alums.
That being said:
Naked Gun, Animal House, Spinal Tap, Holy Grail. Grail beats out Animal House for the championship. Happy Gilmore against Animal House in the Semis was a killer.
Posted by: Slartibartfast | April 6, 2005 01:39 PM
Lebowski, Animal House, Spinal Tap, and Strangelove
Tap takes it over Lebowski
Posted by: Nathan Hamm | April 6, 2005 01:50 PM
young frankenstein v princess bride,
austin powers v lost in america
Posted by: lucia | April 6, 2005 02:24 PM
correction:
rushmore v austin powers
young frankenstein v spinal tap
young frankenstein to win
Posted by: lucia | April 6, 2005 02:32 PM
Final Four:
Raising Arizona
Animal House
Dazed and Confused
Holy Grail
Finals:
Animal House
Holy Grail
Champion:
Who cares with those choices? We win either way!
Posted by: Katie | April 6, 2005 02:35 PM
Ferris Beuller
High Fidelity
Blazing Saddles
Stripes
...and yes, you missed a lot of good ones.
Posted by: leelu | April 6, 2005 02:49 PM
American Pie
Groundhog's Day
Princess Bride
Dr. Strangelove
With the final be Gh day and Princess Bride. gh day wins.
I'm not going to complain about what they left out. Selection comittees always leave something worthwhile out. It's the Law of Selection Committees.
Posted by: flaime | April 6, 2005 03:38 PM
Out of the Broad- Raising Arizona over Spaceballs.
The toughest bracket, SNL- Animal House in overtime over Caddyshack
Not sure how Smart- Princess Bride spits on Bull Durham
The most complained about, Classic- Blazing Saddles shuts out Slap Shot
Animal House all the way.
Posted by: Paul Phillips | April 6, 2005 05:44 PM
Lebowski
Animal House
Spinal Tap
Airplane
Tap over Animal House in the Final.
Posted by: Eric | April 6, 2005 09:08 PM
I can't believe no one picked it correctly:
South Park
Caddyshack
Office Space
Holy Grail (although Life of Brian is the best Python movie)
Posted by: Greg T. | April 7, 2005 02:15 AM
South Park vs. Animal House (South Park)
Spinal Tap vs. Holy Grail (Holy Grail)
Winner: Holy Grail
Personal Replacements (none of which change the Final Four):
Broad:
Just about anything subs for Strange Brew (SCTV is just like SNL, except it's not funny. I put in Mrs. Doubtfire instead, it's one of Robin Williams' best, plus it's a great drag comedy.) Still loses 1st Round to Naked Gun.
SNL:
Anchorman subs for Bowfinger (Much funnier). Makes it to Sweet 16 over National Lampoon's Vacation and Wayne's World, but loses to Animal House
Smart:
Clerks subs for Broadcast News, makes it to Elite 8 over When Harry Met Sally, Best In Show, and Dazed and Confused, losing only to Spinal Tap
Dogma subs for Christmas Story, makes it to 2nd Round over High Fidelity, loses to Spinal Tap
Classic:
It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World subs for The Graduate (If that's a comedy, than St. Elmo's Fire and The Breakfast Club are comedies.) Loses 1st Round to Blazing Saddles
Of course, as another SNL alum said, that's just my opinion, I could be wrong...
Posted by: Thief | April 7, 2005 04:22 AM
I'm not the only one who thinks Grosse Pointe Blank is a lot funnier than High Fidelity, am I?
Posted by: Jonathan | April 7, 2005 04:56 AM
I thought so too, Jonathan. I almost came up with my own 64, but it was too much work.
Posted by: michele | April 7, 2005 05:50 AM
Final Four:
Spaceballs v. Animal House (take the House and the points)
When Harry Met Sally v. Dr. Strangelove (take Strangelove, 2 asprin and have Meg call me in the morning).
Grail v. Strangelove was a close call, as was Harry and Sally v. Office Space.
How did High Fidelity get into the category when Grosse Point Blank, a much funnier Cusack movie didn't make the cut?
As for the Vacation vs. Vegas Vacation and Christmas Vacation, why not simply put the vacations in to a play in against each other. In any case, they'd still lose out in Rd. 2.
The SNL alum category pits Animal House against Caddyshack in Rd 1? Nuts. That's a Elite 8/Final Four matchup at worst.
Where are all the Martin and Lewis? Three Stooges? Marx Bros? Those are classics last time I checked.
Posted by: lawhawk | April 7, 2005 01:30 PM
I call fraught on the whole affair for omitting the following:
Ball of Fire
Miracle of Morgan's Creek
The Palm Beach Story
The Apartment
And they break their own "no Lorne Michaels, no SNL" qualifier by including Eddie Murphy movies Jean Doumanian and Dick Ebersol ran the show in the Murphy years.
That said:
Strangelove
Tap
Shaun of the Dead
Animal House
Posted by: Greg | April 8, 2005 11:04 AM
Strange Brew, Caddyshack, Office Space and Blazing Saddles.
Posted by: drew | April 8, 2005 12:15 PM
In the SNL alumni:
They put 'Rushmore' (which was a great movie) and 'bowfinger', but not 'Airheads'? Silly silliness.
Posted by: hockeypuck | April 8, 2005 12:21 PM
Tough picks. I went with Bueller, Ghostbusters, Grail, and the Princess Bride, with the Bride sinking a three point shot in the final three seconds of the game to cinch it.
