Song/Condiment of the Night

[note: download has expired, as they all do in 24 hours]

No reason except that it's probably the greatest song ever made.

That's right. I said EVER.

Smashing Pumpkins - Mayonaise.

Fool enough to almost be it
Cool enough to not quite see it
Pick your pockets full of sorrow
And run away with me tomorrow

We値l try and ease the pain
But somehow we値l feel the same
Well, no one knows
Where our secrets go

I send a heart to all my dearies
When your life is so, so dreary
I知 rumored to the straight and narrow
While the harlots of my perils

And I fail
But when I can, I will
Try to understand
That when I can, I will

Mother weep the years I知 missing
All our time can稚 be given
Shut my mouth and strike the demons
That cursed you and your reasons
Out of hand and out of season
Out of love and out of feeling
So bad

When I can, I will
Words defy the plan
When I can, I will

Fool enough to almost be it
And cool enough to not quite see it
And old enough to always feel this
Always old, I値l always feel this

No more promise no more sorrow
No longer will I follow
Can anybody hear me
I just want to be me
When I can, I will
Try to understand
That when I can, I will

Damned good.

When Billy was asked where he got the title for the song he simply replied "You know where I got the title for Mayonaise"? I looked in my refrigerator."

Corgan always had a way with words...

Love it.

at a glance, I knew you were nuts, but so what? You're on Long island.

This one worries me, especially so close to Opening Day(Night).

Haha...nothing by the Smashing Pumpkins could be the best song ever. The word over-rated comes to mind.

While I do not agree that this is the best song ever (I think that honor goes to the ultra-extended 12-minute version of Counting Crows's "Murder of One", at least in my opinion), I think it a great song as well.

I don't remember where I heard this, but y'know that "whoo" sound in the chorus? It's like "chordWHOOchord"? Well, evidently Billy Corgan used to have this really old guitar that had something wrong with it, and whenever he didn't hold his hand over the strings or whenever he wasn't actually playing it, it would feed back. That feedback made it into the song.

That's about the only piece of SP trivia I know.

Already got it on my iPod. One of the three songs that "made it" from that album.

An all-time favorite of mine for many years.

I don't know if it's the best song EVER, but mayonnaise is up there for best condiment ever. Especially the stuff you can get at "Frite-Land," a blok from the Grand'Place in Brussels that's specifically made for fries.

"I seen 'em do it, man: they fuckin' drown 'em in that shit."

Rhinocerous is better.

I don't care at all for angst-rock.

So I don't even like this, much less think it's great.

NF, yeah I am not big on whinge-rock either. My big problem with SP is that Corgan's voice just annoys the crap out of me...in the same way Jizzy Pearl's does.

Kinda late on this, but I think 'Mayonaise' is one of the quinessential SP songs. Certainly grabs the self-reflection/angst/volume dynamism angles that made the band great.

On that album, though, my favorite would be 'Soma.' Kinda pretentious, but beautiful.
