Songs of The Night - Hard/Soft II
anti love song version

Keeping with the theme here (and keeping with my Brand New obsession), one mosh worthy song and one tune of the kind you sing while drinking Jack straight up and smoking a cigarette in a dingy bar.

Sevendust - Bitch mp3

Brand New - Me vs. Maradona vs. Elvis - mps
(words below)

Don't read too much into the anti love song theme today (as a few have already). I love my husband like a fat kid loves cake.

We'll do something with real love songs tomorrow. Tonight is for the hatas, not the playas.

Also, feel free to suggest other anti-love songs. I haven't compiled a non-Valentine Valentine's CD in two years.

"Me Vs. Maradona Vs. Elvis"

With one or two I get used to the room
We go slow when we first make our moves
By five or six bring you out to the car
Number nine with my head on the bar

And it's sad, but true
Out of cash and I.O.U's

I've got desperate desires and unadmirable plans
My tongue will taste of gin and malicious intent
Bring you back to the bar
Get you out of the cold
A sober, straight face gets you out of your clothes
And they're scared that we know
All the crimes they'll commit
Who they'll kiss before they get home

I will lie awake
Lie for fun and fake the way I hold you
Let you fall for every empty word I say

Barely conscious in the door where you stand
Your eyes are fighting sleep while your mouth makes its demands
You laugh at every word trying hard to be cute
I almost feel sorry for what I'm going to do
And your hair smells of smoke
Who will cast the first stone?
You can sin or spend the night all alone

Brass buttons on your coat hold the cold
In the shape of a heart that they cut out of stone
You're using all your looks that you've thrown from the start
If you let me have my way I swear I'll tear you apart
Cause it's all you can be
You're a drunk and you're scared
It's ladies night, all the girls drink for free

I will lie awake
And lie for fun and fake the way I hold you
Let you fall for every empty word I say

I will lie awake
And lie for fun and fake the way I hold you
Let you fall for every empty word I say

I will lie awake
And lie for fun and fake the way I hold you
Let you fall for every empty word I say

No contest. Public Image Ltd., "This Is Not A Love Song". Hell I'm playing it now just for this thread...

That's where the title of the previous post came from.

Okay, we've established that I've either got to read further down the ASV blog headers or else refresh the screen more often :^P Apologies for clogging your comment space with that too-obvious reference (although not for moshing around my study listening to the song, obviously).

Here's another one for the "special" one in your life: New Order's "Every Second Counts" - "Every second counts/ When I am with you/ I think you are a pig/ You should be in a zoo/ The smile upon your face/ Is always set in place/ Every second counts". An honorable mention goes to "Subculture" to helping us realise that we can't shaft while we're by ourself.

The Smiths' "William It Was Really Nothing" also comes to mind.

The Smiths & New Order came out with dozens of these anti-Valentines. So when Marr and Sumner had their famous decade-long extramarital affair, the chemistry was MOAB in scale. Check out "Reality" by Electronic - "Don't you see there's nothing in your head/ And your body's on vacation"

I'll close this ramble with the Beautiful South, "I Love You (But You're Boring" and its sequel, "I Hate You (But You're Interesting)".

Graham Parker -- "Local Girls"

Elvis Costello -- "Miracle Man"

Joe Jackson -- " Happy Loving Couples"

(hmm. Anyone see an historical pattern, here?)

Pavement "Box Elder"

"I've got a lot of things to do
A lot of places to go
I've got a lot of good things coming my way
And I'm afraid to say that you're not one of them"

Gang of Four's version of Ring of Fire.

re: Beam straight up and a cig in a dive:

Liz Phair's Divorce Song: I'd have stayed in your bed for the rest of my life
just to prove I was right
that it's harder to be friends than lovers
and you shouldn't try to mix the two
cause if you od it and you're still unhappy
then you know that hte problem is you."

oh, and I like Wedding Present's version of Box Elder better than Pavement's.

Harry Nilsson
"You're Breaking My Heart"

'Love Stinks' J Geils
'Love Hurts" Nazareth
'Love is a Killer' Vixen
'Alone Again' Dokken

From the country group:
Travis Tritt
"Here's a quarter, call someone who cares..."

What? No "Weird Al" Yankovic songs listed? Here's one, complete with lyrics:

"I Was Only Kidding"

When I said that I'd be faithful
When I promised I'd be true
When I swore that I could never
Be with anyone but you
When I told you that I loved you
With those tender words I spoke
I was only kidding
Now, can't you take a joke?

When I said that I need you, baby
When I told you that I really care
When I said that I can't live without you
When I said I'd follow you anywhere
When I said you could always trust me
When I said I'd never leave you flat
Well, guess what? I was only kidding, baby
I can't belieeeeve you fell for that! You're so gullible...

(I was only kidding) I was only kidding
(I was only kidding) You thought that was for real?
I was only kidding
Now I'm sorry if you misunderstood, but the fact remains
(I was only kidding) I was only kidding
(I was only kidding) Baby, baby, I was...
(I was) only kidding
Well, I guess I got you pretty good, now listen...

When I said that I love you, baby
From the very bottom of my heart
When I said that I miss you so badly
Every second we're apart
When I swore that you're just getting more and more
Beautiful every day
Well, I was only kidding, honey
What's the matter with you anyway? Let me tell you something

(I was only kidding) I was only kidding
(I was only kidding) You understand, don't ya?
I was only kidding
Well, I guess it probably hurts you alot, but you gotta know
(I was only kidding) I was only kidding
(I was only kidding) Come on now, get a clue
I was only kidding
I really love you... NOT!

When I said you oughta marry
When I said that we should settle down
Well, I was pullin' your leg there, honey
I was just foolin' around
You see, I -- I never meant to upset you, darlin'
I never meant to hurt anyone
I was only kidding, baby
Why don't you just put down that gun?
Let's talk this over

(I was only kidding) I was only kidding
(I was only kidding) Whatch where you're pointing that thing
(I was only kidding)
Hey, I'm sorry if your heart is broke... you gotta realize
(I was only kidding) I was only kidding
(I was only kidding) Aww, yeah
I was only kidding
Now, honey, can't you take a joke?
(I was only kidding) I was only kidding
(I was only kidding) I was only kidding
(I was only kidding) I was only kidding
(I was only kidding) I was only kidding
(I was only kidding) I didn't lie to you
I was only kidding... Yes indeed
(I was only kidding) Baby, baby, you know
(I was only kidding) Hey!
