I saw that a few minutes ago. It is unbelieveable.

I have several words:

Fuck. You. Next time you have trouble with those pesky terrorists, Spain, and there's nowhere left to withdraw from...you know who not to call.

Sekimori,

Let's make it easier for them. Let's give it to them in their mother tongue:

"Son unos hijos de la gran puta. Españoles pendejos. No cagamos en el recontracoño de sus madres."

My lord. That is so tasteless, insensitive, and downright ugly. Those are some non-obscene words one can start with.

OOps. "No" in the last sentence should read "Nos."

When the train system in Barcelona goes up in flames again, let 'em ride buses.

I am stunned. That anyone could design something like that amazes me. What type of mind does it take to even get that idea? And that their bosses don't fire them immendiately is even scarier.

Today is one of those days in which i feel ashamed of being a spaniard. Lately is an ussual feeling. Not all of us spaniards are that way, but I understand all that you can think about us. All I can say is sorry.

The issue of our "friends" around the world becomes even more clear as the days pass. Spain is going to have a reckoning one day because of their capitulation to terrorists. After they will no doubt seek help from the United States.

let Spain join France in becoming a muslim country..... just don't ask for US or Russian help anytime soon.

screw them both!

I have a few words, michele. But I'd rather not use them and risk offending anyone.

Not surprisingly, the Creator of Worlds has an eloquent photoshop on this very topic.

Kerry was on Imus this morning spinning on Iraq

"But I would immediately call a summit meeting of the European community. They haven't lived up to the obligations of their own resolution that they passed at the U.N."

Makes one want to scream that someone this obtuse has even a remote chance of being elected dog catcher.

The Clintonistas are playing Kerry like a cheap violin.

'"Son unos hijos de la gran puta. Españoles pendejos. No cagamos en el recontracoño de sus madres."'

Blame leftists, not spaniards.

I am a conservative ashamed by all this.

And remember, El Pais is the spanish version of NYT, NBC and the same. The anticonservative bias in Spain is worse than yours, thats all and no less.

I am crying, sorry

I don't blame all Spaniards at all and I don't think my commenters here meant that.

I do blame the leftists for this propaganda garbage, just like I do here in the U.S.

Do not be sorry, Juan.

Juan,

Perdoname. I did not mean to insult all spaniards with my comment. Im sure there are a great many in Spain that have found that ad completely disrespectful.

Maybe I should have added "izquierdistas" to my comment.

Um. I think it's mistranslated into English.

It means, "a lot can happen in one day. imagine what could happen in three months." It's a pitch to get you to subscribe so you don't miss important news.

Not a very sensitive ad, perhaps, but not exactly anti-American.

El Pais is being deliberately ambigous. Recently the White House asked for clarification of Zapatero's comments while in tunisia. Like in this campaign it was deliberately done in a way that it could be taken in many ways. Looking at both sources I know how it was intended, in a mean spirited way. One that would create a knee jerk reaction and would send their hits through the roof, regardless of whether they were successful in increasing their subscribers, for one day the increased their traffic.

Visitor: You're not taking into consideration the idiomatic expressions of the Spanish. You are doing a literal translation. If you look at the smoldering image and consider the message, there is a subtext going on that only those on the left will cheer about and those elsewhere will be apalled by.

That's a fake. Please, next time confirm your information before insult a newspaper and an entire country. You can contact "El Pais" at +34 91 337 8200 to confirm. Thank you.

It's not a Fake, you can check the url: http://www.canalmailcorp.com/GeneradorMenCam.jsp?p=2850AR6C&e=Canalmail&d=&t=miembro&ea=canalmail

Sorry for my poor english. Althoug reading english is easy for me, wirting english is another thing...

I agree with Michele about the deliberatily of the spot. And this is reason because I could not believe that El Pais had the intention to offend people of New York. Btw, I'm spanish, and I promise you that the translation that Franco Aleman has given you in barcepundit is deliberatily wrong.

It is not a fake.
El País has recognized the "disgusting" character of the campaign ad, that they say should have never happened.
See tomorrow's editorial where they say they are investigating the chain of mistakes that led to this stupid ad:
http://www.elpais.es/articuloCompleto.html?xref=20040916elpepuopi_1&type=Tes&anchor=elpporopi

Instead of blaming spaniards, even those you call "leftist" u should blame the publicist that made the advertisement.

El Pais has already apologized.

Blaming so fastly in such a general way is very dangerous. You came calling a whole country (or simply the suporters of a certain party) "hijos de puta", for an inadequate use of two images in an ad done by a small section of a paper... What do you expect from the rest of the world?.

Un, Nic, that was me. Direct your anger towards me and not michele. She did not make the hijos de puta comment, I did.

Fui yo.

Yes, sadly, it was not a fake. The ad was so disgusting it was really difficult to believe that came from "El País". My apologies for my previous comment, based in wrong info that wasn't verified enough.

My "you" was a "vosotros".

And, I have no anger at all. Maybe that´s the problem?.

I´m simply astonished at the overreaction I´ve seen in the comments of this page.

The ad is not even a big campaign. It was sent by e-mail! Completelly unnoticed (unfortunately) by most of the workers and management in El País (which as soon as they knew about it, wrote an editorial to apoligize ) ...

Those among you that generalize so fast... What do you think people from Iraq might think about you, using the same standards?

There were these other photos of "weapons of mass destruction"...weren´t they used in a more vicious way?.

Chapeau, Nic. They make a huge deal out of a stupid internet advertisement, while they sell huge guns to the kids in the street. Cool, pretty cool.

When the scandal about the nipplegate started, many people in Europe thought: "Oh, the americans are so stupid... they make us laugh, they are just so scared about a single nipplet". I try and try and try to make people understand that what a news media here in Spain says to us is not the people of the USA; it would be a way of making things soooooooo simple.

I'm afraid some of you guys and girls are doing just the same.

EL PAIS is NOT Spain. EL PAIS is NOT the Spanish people. EL PAIS is NOT representative of all the lefty people in Spain.

I'm Spanish, I'm lefty and I often buy EL PAIS. And I'm so ashamed. Even if I don't have ANY responsibility. I hate the one who's made that advertisement just as you do.

You should not think that a newspaper represents a people, a political idea or a country. You'd be in a really big mistake.

Hugs from Spain.

Sp, fewer words same message - which means double effect! ;-)

Anyway, the same as Elías, I send you all a big saludo from Spain.

As farewell, this text from Phil Graham, writen in 1948:

"The necessary haste with which we operate in the production of a daily newspaper at times leads us, despite our best care, into unavoidable errors. Critics often read into these errors entirely nonexistent malice, magnifying them as further evidence of our sins. Responsible newspapers stand ready to correct errors as zealously as they seek to avoid committing them ".

And now, I'm waiting for a rectification of those who have exposed in their blogs the other grate photoshop artifact.

And hope, of course, that no one from Iraq, and without a continuity solution, makes another digital editing artifact with the Babylon Biblos, ie., to shell more newspapers or to get more visits.

Thanks.

I have thinked firstly in a Biblos, but it could have been a market, a street, a bridge, a house, a COUNTRY. (the palaces don't bother me)

I do completely agree that the ad is absolutely tasteless and insensitive, but I also believe that it's been mistranslated into English. And it's been done deliverately.

Anyway, you fucking Yankees have gone absolutely mad. Even more that those pesky terrorists. You're an such and arrogant and ignorant country that only contribute to mess up anything you touch. That's what really frightens me out of my wits.

"you know who not to call"? Your goverment is the one who got us into problems.
USA, away from Iraq and from the rest of the world. Stay at home and don't fuck the plantes as you do usually.

But, the campaign from El País is wrong, it was unfair with the people who suffered the 9-11 attacks.
As unfair as you are with the thousand of innocent men, women, children the US Army has killed in Iraq, who knows why.

USA, look at yourself. You have enough to solve at home
