How well all of these men knew John Kerry is questionable, and discrepancies between how some of them described Kerry thirty-five years ago and how they describe him today suggest that their opinions are largely based upon political differences rather than objective assessments of Kerry's military record. For example, Rear Admiral Roy Hoffman is quoted above, yet the Los Angeles Times reported: . . . Hoffman and Kerry had few direct dealings in Vietnam. A Los Angeles Times examination of Navy archives found that Hoffman praised Kerry's performance in cabled messages after several river skirmishes.

Here's a real criticism of some Vietnam claims: Clinton, Edwards misstating Kerry's reason for choosing swift boats.

I also would like to say that Allah could have quoted a little farther on McCain:

McCain said that's all in the past to him, but he's speaking out against the anti-Kerry ad because "it reopens all the old wounds of the Vietnam War, which I spent the last 35 years trying to heal." The comments of DownWithChimpy2004 and other similar commenters read like a right-wing satire of the left. Unfortunately, I fear they are the product of a left-wing spam program, and I find it telling that I have difficulty distinguishing between the two possiblities.

Ryan, that is completely unfair. I agree with criticism of Kerry or McCain, if they are complaining about Bush injecting Vietnam into the campaign. (Puh-leeze. I'm a Kerry supporter and I'm darn sick of his "I was a war hero" act.) However, if these bozos are lying about Kerry's record or the facts--none of them actually served on Kerry's boat and the ones that did support Kerry--then that's not free speech. That's slander and libel. Of course he should sue.

They commanded the other boats in his squadron. They worked with Kerry on a daily basis, since swift boats don't operate alone.

Kerry dragged them into this by using their picture as a campaign prop, insinuating that they supported him. 12 of them asked him to stop using the picture, and he didn't.

I gave supported McCain last primary. This time I'm giving some cash to the swift boat commanders:

They served in his unit. Does not serving on his boat disqualify them form saying anything? I would agree that a criticism of them would be that they weren't on his boat. That's called fighting speech with more speech, not threatening legal action as a means of strangling speech in the cradle.

It also appears they are stating their opinion and what they saw.

He's not doing that. His lawyers are threatening suit before the material even airs. That's some bullshit censorship if I ever saw it.

No way man....PBRs travel alone and up river, sometimes all the way into Cambodia. Man, I want some mangos. A quick word of advice "never get off the boat"

swift boats are PCFs, not PBRs. PBRs are a lot smaller and use jacuzzi-jets instead of screws, so they can go a lot further up river. I've done a little work on them in peacetime.

It strikes me that we could save an awful lot of time, energy and innocent electrons if we condensed all this froth down to "I hate John Kerry's guts" or "I hate George Bush's guts" and left it at that. In today's climate, anybody who doesn't see one of these guys as demon-spawn and the other as a saint feels like friggin' Switzerland...

Couple quick points for the pro-swiftees crowd:

1) As of now, Bush's spokesman has said that the Bush campaign does not question that Kerry served honorably. Instead of wasting time here, you need to flood the administration wiith letters and get Bush to say that he stands behind these ads. Otherwise, it seems like he's afraid to take a stand on this important issue.

2) If Kerry "lied" to get his medals, the military needs to investigate. This is a serious matter, and should be looked into. I suggest you write them letters and ask them to launch a formal inquiry into what REALLY happened that day. If Kerry and his crewmates ALL lied in order to get medals for Kerry, that's something the American people need to know. Sure, the facts were looked into at the time, and were written into Kerry's service record by his superiors...but with allegations this serious, we can't be certain that his superiors weren't in on the fraud, too. I hope you'll write everyone involved, and make your feelings known. We deserve the truth, after all.

Because you think if a bunch of people wrote the pentagon military they'd investigate?

To get an investigation would probably need some pressure on Congress but somehow I doubt they will push for any sort of investigation on this.
