This week of national mourning has been met with profound, moving, and dignified speech by various world leaders about the 40th President, Ronald Reagan. . . Catalano has a great picture that captures Reagan's cheerfulness [Read More]

Something hit me this morning.
Do you remember Frank Miller's Dark Knight series, how they played Reagan as a made up dictator president for life in the future, the US military as a bunch of thugs and Reagan leading us to Nuclear war?
I thought about it today because that comic (which was lets face it a GREAT story) led to the darkness in the comics that followed, a very pessimistic batch of books. It one of the reasons why I only read Groo when published and Usagi Yojimbo these days.
I wonder how many comic readers of the left remember this and believed it would happen. Are they the same adult crowd that now believes the Bush = Hitler stuff or kept talking about how the President would cancel the 2004 elections to keep power.
The only other memory I have of President Reagan in comics was in Jon Sable #1 where the lead character (barely) saves Reagan from an assassian and has his past wiped out and carte blanche to operate.
Does anyone else remember any other appearences of President Reagan in comics of the 80's or 90's?

Someone visiting ASV for the first time might wonder whether the Lebowski-inspired title of the page refers to the photo of Reagan.
You know, it works for me.

When the honor guard was standing around the coffin and the cross was brought down, did anyone else think it was time to get to work?
For those of us who believe, I think we know somewhere back in our deep, dark recesses that this is a religious war.
For those who don't, it is also in a way, the "religion" of democracy v. the "ism" religions - fascism, communism, statism, totalitarianism. Either way, it's time to get to work. RR believed in US when we didn't, now and for a few decades more, it's time to believe in him and ourselves.
And whatever that music was, perfect.

My television wasn't working, so I missed the first half hour and had to watch the rest of it in a bar, surrounded mainly by cynics. Even in that environment, I lost it during the recessional. It was so solemn and beautiful and sad.
Margeret Thatcher's marvelous eulogy (which I missed, but found on-line) had the perfect phrase for summing up the man:
The Great Liberator

Sandy, the other side considers it a religious war, so it IS a religious war. Our side's religion is anything that isn't their religion. Giving it a name is moot. It's "US vs. Them."

Well now I will never think of "the Dude" in any other context.
But I'm ok with that.
