What the hell?? Now with Updates!

From Allah: This is part of an actual caption on an AFP photo of a soldier's funeral: In the US military families can only watch and wait for that fateful knock on the door as the toll in Iraq goes up... Go look for yourself. Update: What the hell #2: Kevin Drum dredges up a 20 year old review of Condoleeza Rice's first book to "prove" that her testimony wouldn't be worthy. Note the review is by someone who couldn't even do enough research to figure out if Rice was a male or female. ([ast two links take you to blog entries abou this]

» Drum beats up on Rice from BoiFromTroy
I missed most of the Rice testimony this morning, as I was asleep, then taking a shower, then on a conference call at the office. the only part I listened to was while driving into the office, when Richard Benveniste... [Read More]

I really enjoy reading Michele Catalano's A Small Victory, but I can't see precisely where Michele is coming from regarding this Kevin Drum piece about Condoleeza Rice. Michele is annoyed because she claims Kevin is using the piece to rebut... [Read More]

Googled Kalvoda and got this review

Also the first commenter you link to is wrong. The guy has been in the US since 1951.

Another thing....this only appears on some obscure website with an Oct. 03 dateline. Are we to understand this was reviewed then or when the book came out? Then I went to the link and it appears this is the only thing he has written there.

I also typed his name into google website search for St. Joseph's College in CT and he didn't come up at all. Am I missing something? Is he no longer with the university? Did he review this at the time and it has just been recently transcribed to web or did he do the review in '03?

I'm confused...did Drum and his readers want Condi on the stand or not? I mean, before he even saw what it was, Drum was calling her testimony invalid.

Did some more digging and found this review was first published in 12/85

Key passage:

"The judgmental tone of Rice's derogatory reference to "revisionist historians" brings to mind a review of her book The Soviet Union and the Czechoslovak Army, 19481983, in the December 1985 issue of the American Historical Review (p. 1236) when she was an assistant professor at Stanford. The reviewer claimed that Rice "frequently does not sift facts from propaganda and valid information from disinformation or misinformation." In addition, according to the reviewer, she "passes judgments and expresses opinions without adequate knowledge of the facts" and her "writing abounds with meaningless phrases." I cannot testify for or against the accuracy and fairness of this review. But I am tempted to wonder, in the immortal words of Yogi Berra, whether we are experiencing deja vu all over again. "

sigh. A frustrated AP caption writer decides he's Ernest Freaking Hemingway.

It's AFP, not AP. Stands for Agence France Presse. Need one say more?

Drum has increasingly proven to be a disappointment. He's barely better than partisan hacks like Kos or Atrios, I'm afraid.

HT, my bad. But now I want to go look into who is "Getty Images".
