losing our mojo

Via Ken Layne, I found out today that Mojo Nixon is retiring.
Pigfoot, Louisiana- March 2004-Mojo Nixon, has announced that on March 20, 2004 he will perform his final concert at the Continental Club in Austin Texas. Rumors have been circulating about Nixon's retirement for some time and Nixon finally confirmed this will indeed be his final performance. I have nothing more to say," says Nixon. "Not only am I empty, but obviously nobody gives a rat's ass about the things I have been saying for twenty years. The masses are just as blinded by the light of stupidity, prudery and the shiny objects of hate."
Mmm....shiny objects of hate. Cranky bastard, ain't he? Mojo Nixon w. Jello Biafra - Love me I'm a Liberal mp3
[Originally written by Phil Ochs, Jello and Mojo updated the lyrics to make them more timely] I cried when they shot John Lennon tears ran down my spine and I cried when i saw "jfk" as though I'd lost a father of mine but malcolm x and ice-t had it coming they got what they asked for this time so love me, love me, love me i'm a liberal i go to pro-choice rallies r ecycle my cans and jars i'll honk if you love the dead hope those funny grunge bands become stars but don't talk about revolution that's going a little bit too far so love me, love me, love me i'm a liberal i cheered when clinton was chosen my faith in the system reborn i'll do anything to save our schools if my taxes ain't too much more and i love blacks and gays and latinos as long as they don't move next door so love me, love me, love me i'm a liberal rush limbaugh and the l.a.p.d. should all hang their heads in shame i can't understand where they're at arsenio should set them straight but if neigborhood watch doesn't know you i hope the cops take down your name so love me, love me, love me i'm a liberal yeh, i read the new republic(an) rolling stone and mother jones too if i vote it's a democrat with a sensible economy view but when it comes to terrorist arabs there's no one more red, white and blue so love me, love me, love me i'm a liberal once i was young and had an attitude stickers covered the car i drove in even went on some direct actions when there weren't rent-a-cops to be seen ah, but now i've grown older and wiser and that's why i'm turning you in so love me, love me, love me i'm a liberal [I think we need some updated lyrics for this song]

Politics completely aside, Mojo Nixon kicks more ass than you'll ever hear on the radio.

I saw him as a one man show in San Diego about 10 years ago and he blew the place apart.

Even if he couldn't remember how to play 'rockaway beach'... I'm sad to see him hang it up.

Michael J. Fox has no Elvis in him.
And Elvis is in Joan Rivers
but he's trying to get out, man!
He's trying to get out!
Listen up Joanie Baby!

I don't even know who he is, but he sure does sound cranky, doesn't he?

Maybe he can make a comeback as the opener for the William Hung World Tour™

ELVIS EATS BOATS
ELVIS EATS BOATS

Won't have Mojo Nixon to kick around any more.

Had to say it first.

That's going to be one big "f@#k you" party.

The Saturday night of SXSW---when all the big wig execs will be in town---at the Continental Club??? That is one primo gig. Mojo's going to be able to flip off everyone and he'll make some moolah in the meantime. Good for him.

I wish I could be there.

Wow, it was 2002 when I quoted the original lyrics.

I grew up on Ochs. In the late 80's, Sean Penn had bought the rights to a biopic but it never happened.

I cried when they shot John Lennon
tears ran down my spine

Ummm...just where is this guy's tear ducts located????

Oh god... I have no idea who this guy is... i.feel.old.....

I rather doubt that Mojo will do more than pout for a little while before coming out with a new album. He's probably just in a funk. He's not old enough to retire unless he's sick or something.

Oh, by the way, that's "Elvis needs boats."

noooooooooooo!

Damn, i'm gonna hafta go out, buy some cheap gin, have a bbq. Maybe feel a little existential. Or forget about the bomb, and light a fart. Burn down the mall. Get outta my way!

Seven George Washington dollars, and six cents short of 50 cents.

Ah, the trenchant political analysis of the artist responsible for "Stuffing Martha's Muffin."

I love Mojo Nixon, I'm just bemused that he ever thought people were coming to him as some sort of a guru, rather than just for the fun of his music.

Still laughing out loud at "Elvis eats boats," though.

"Ah, the sailing Elvis. Captain Elvis. Commodore Elvis, it is."

Damn, I love Mojo but it sounds like he's hosting the pity party for Ted Rall and Howard Stern. "I'm taking my gee-tar and going home."

I wonder if someone else will fill the void left behind by such a delightfully off-center person, crazy enough to pen lyrics like "are you drinkin' with me Jesus? I can't see you very clear...are you drinkin' with me Jesus? Won't you buy a friend a beer.".

Mojo's albums with Skid were the best, but nothing compared to seeing him live. There will always be a slot reserved in my CD changer for Mojo.

"The masses are just as blinded by the light of stupidity, prudery and the shiny objects of hate."

Simple advice for Mr. Nixon: If you hate the public, don't be suprised when the public hates you back.

That song sucked. That wasn't Mojo, and that wasn't really rock.

Mojo has fucked up politics, but he does rock. that song did not rock.

If Mojo has gone alternative, well then he damned well ought to retire.

That song does suck, but I blame Jello.
