Does he think money grows on trees?

[To quote my mother] Bush's plan to give 18 million dollars to the NEA is, in a word, preposterous.

It are appalling!

Giving any money to the NEA is preposterous. I'm none too happy with my W these days.

Yes, David Strain, and as Reagan pointed out, at least drunken sailors spend their own money.

As I commented on the Scrappleface story, this means I could become a no-talent artist, sculptor, or pornographic performance artist, and the government would subsidize it. Neat-o!! Sure beats having to work for a living, or be a competent and talented enough artist that people would pay for my work voluntarily, as opposed to having the money taken from their hard-earned paychecks.

I feel compelled to point out here, as I have other places, that this ain't Karen Finley's NEA anymore.

Pornographic performance artists and no-talent pomo hacks aren't getting the money anymore, haven't for a while. The NEA's Big Project at the moment? Shakespeare. Traditional performances of Shakespeare, in fact.

Now, I don't think the Government really ought to be in the culture business, but we should at least tailor our arguments to the situation of the NEA as it is now, not as it was a decade or more ago.

I would bet actual money that Michele would have a scathing rant if the story published was that Jesse Helms (yeah, I know he's retired) had removed $18M from NEA funding.
