burning pictures of me in my face*

Bush will be burning with Fawkes in London:

"Our main message is to Blair, but undermining Blair undermines Bush," said Simon Hester, an activist at a recent meeting in London to plan the protests.

"If we can help sabotage George Bush's election campaign, so much the better. We want to send a message to all the people of the world - I think our best defence against a terrorist outrage is having a huge demonstration. [emphasis mine]

Point A: If you really want to protest "a terrorist outrage" try protesting the Iraq resistance. Or Hamas. Or al Qaida.

Point B: Someday (and unfortunately it will be too late) these people will realize that all their protests and effigies only spur on the terrorists. You think they don't watch international news? Of course they know about the protests and unrest. And they thrive on that. The more they cry "Bush is Hitler!" or "Pull out Now!" the stronger the terrorists that are killing U.S. soldiers and hampering the process of bringing peace to Iraq will feel.

Why do I bother?

Er...equating the Iraqi resistance with Al-Queda is kind of odd, don't you think? One is fighting against an occupying army, and the other is a terrorist group that has no reason for existing.

"I'm Not An Effigy" by Ministry

Joseph - But you have no problem with them calling Bush a terrorist?

Alli - Yes!

Michele - it's a bit extreme, but then again, Bush and the rest of the Coup did invade a country that was no threat on evidence that was either (a) a lie or (b) a huge, huge mistake, resulting in the deaths of both Iraqis and Americans to no purpose. Not a terrorist, but more of an a-hole.

"Gee, I was going to sit back and accept the 140,000-strong foreign army occupying my country, but there are protests going on, so I think I'll keep resisting!"

Put it this way: if somebody invaded and occupied this country, would you need news reports to motivate you?

Depends on whether my country's government had been killing, raping, and torturing people by the thousands. If they had, I'd be fighting for the foreign invaders, not against them.

I guess I'm just pragmatic that way.

"...resulting in the deaths of both Iraqis and Americans to no purpose."

You're going to have to back up the phrase "to no purpose" to avoid getting dismissed out of hand, Joseph. I can personally see several purposes that getting rid of Saddam and installing a secular democratic regime (yes, I'm being hopeful) could serve.

"Pull Out Now"

sigh If only their fathers had followed that advice a little sooner.

"recent meeting in London"

So, they won't actually be, ya know, voting in the election or anything? Just meeting and hugely demonstrating? In London?

'Cause then I pretty much don't care.

Steve,

C'mon, you know that whole "free Iraq" thing was a later justification by the Coup., once it became increasingly obvious that Iraq had not been a threat to us. If that was a justification, then we would have occupied Saudi Arabia and Palestine as well and overthrow their despotic regimes.

As someone else mentioned elsewhere,
"Are there going to be giant puppets there? Cause I'm not going if there aren't going to be giant puppets!"

Most attacks were carried out by well trained, experienced paramilitaries. This ‘resistance’ is made up of former Baathists and foreign fighters. There may have been one or two Iraqis seeking revenge for a relative’s accidental death, but they’re so busy being interviewed by Salon and the New York Times that they probably haven't fired a single shot.

It has been. Just not in the USA.

Okay Luke,

Care to give a link to those thousands of people we're raping, or did you just pull that out of your paranoid fantasies? How about torture? We had a Lt. Col fire his pistol in the AIR, and he's facing a court martial.

Nice to hear from the pro-Arab Socialist Party (pro-Nazi) wing of the DNC, that never met a genocidal dictator they didn't like, especially if he executes children and dumps them in mass graves.

I don't know, I rape several hundred people every other day. It would be every day, but I chafe easily.

Oh wait, today's opposite day, I'm sorry. Scratch those first couple of sentences.

"It has been. Just not in the USA."

And burninating. The USA has been burninating all the people. And their thatched roof cottages!
