Mepham update: the week in mepham news

[previous stories can be found here]

During the week, one of the accused players and all of the coaches met with the DA's office in Pennsylvania.

That was basically all that happened in this case until this morning, when it was revealed that two Mepham parents who have spoken out against the football players received a threatening letter.

Anonymous letters were sent this week warning two parents who have spoken out about the Mepham High School football hazing case that they would be sodomized with broomsticks if they don't keep silent, police and one of the people who received the letters said yesterday.

"It said, 'Keep your mouth shut and nothing will happen to you or your family,'" said Jim Rullo of Merrick, who received one of the letters.

Rullo was the lone person who stood up at the board meeting in early October and spoke for the victims. The letter arrived a few days after he spoke at that meeting.

"The first thing I did after reading it was cringe," Rullo said. "Then I was like, 'No -- -- way' because people bullied those kids at camp to be quiet and then people bullied parents to keep quiet and fear is running rampant in this community. If I bail out, then I'm a jerk," he said. "What message am I sending to my family? The only thing I've done is respond to a friend in need."

Rullo has been my hero since the night he stood up in front of a crowded room filled with selfish, shortsighted people who think the real victims in this case are the football team and the school. Rullo knows who the victims really are and he stood up for them when no one else would. And, even in the face of threats and more belligerence from the community, he is fiercely standing his ground because he knows what's right.

If only the other parents of the Bellmore community would think about the message they are sending, not only to their own children and the surrounding communities, but to the rest of the country, who are watching this story unfold.

This letter that Rullo and another unidentified parent received only serves to give evidence to the people who are saying that the whole Bellmore community is stained by this, not just the school.

Rullo should be getting letters of commendation, not threats. And it wouldn't surprise me in the least to discover that it was an adult who wrote this letter and not a student.

note to self: never move to town full of sick selfish warped a-holes.

The longer this goes on, the sicker it gets. I'd actually be pretty suprised if it weren't an adult sending these letters. I think it's time to cross this school district off the list of places I'd consider letting my kids go to school at. Lord.

Well, of course the letter was written by a parent. The same kind of assholes who are raising these jerkwad football playing 'heros'...
I'll bet the parent even showed the kid the letter..."Here's how we deal with this kinda stuff, son..." while the Dueling Banjos played in the background.
This kinda crap goes on everywhere. I personally know a kid who made the team this year for the first time. He's been caught smoking about 40 times and his Dad and Coach let him slide when he got busted righteously throwing rocks at cars a few weeks ago. This kid is 12. He's already told me out right that he's not too impressed with the punishments he gets for this kind of behavior, which I made damn sure his Dad knew he said and...it just goes on and on and on...I've started a betting pool as to when his first jail sentence will be and for what.

Just wandering by and saw the Mepham update. Is there a way to email Mr. Rullo to commend his courage and his principles? I greatly admire both.

Stevie,

My son is just 16. He has or, more precisely, had a friend who smokes. Friend's mother (!) buys him his cigarettes. My son told me this, and said that he had told friend that his mom wouldn't buy him cigarettes, which evidently surprised friend. This led to some little discussion of what other parents allow/forbid which my son told me about at a late night "feed-the-growing-boy" time.

I am always floored by these discussions, although I know enough to know he's not exaggerating: mixed-sex pajama parties, keggers at certain homes (kegs bought by parents) after football games, permission to have friends over/parties when parents aren't home: BYOB and BYOD (these kids drive!), the cigarettes...it's not everyone, but it's more parents than you'd think.

Anyway, my son asked me, in a spirit of inquiry, why it was so important that he behave when all these other kids weren't?

Like you I know where these kids are going. Jail if their parents are lucky, the morgue if they're not. How to get that across?

I finally told him that behavior that is cute at 2, forgivable at 8, and tolerable at 12 is criminal at 16, and that once the police get involved it takes more influence than any parent has to stop the tragedy. He seemed to get it. It is terribly sad that most of the parents of Mepham, always excepting Mr. Rullo, didn't get this across to their sons in time to save them.

Mepham High School and the town of Bellmore are populated totally by festering scum, Mr. Rullo excepted.

Screw emailing him with a letter of support. If he didn't live in the festering armpit of the Gun-Fearing Wussy Universe which is New York, I'd lend him a gun.

Maybe Mr. Broomstick wouldn't be so quick to run his mouth.

Quote by Tom:
“Mepham High School and the town of Bellmore are populated totally by festering scum, Mr. Rullo excepted.”

Mr. Rullo should not be exempt from that remark. Ask him why he was fired from his job of many years not too long ago. The answer is quite ironic!
