My husband's grandmother (93) makes the world's best zeppoles in the world.
Her secret? LARD.

Out here in the west, we call the doughnut holes.

Here on the Lower East Side, we just call them delicious.

MMM, fried dough - the only reason to go to a county fair! If they are called donut holes out west, I would hate to see the size of that donut (fried dough is at least 10" across).

Oh! Those things look amazingly yummy. Although anything involving sugar and deep frying usually is.
