if i had a friend like ben

It's become a Friday night tradition for Alan and I to fight over really bad and/or cheesy music.

He sent me some Jackson 5 (go here to listen). I'm upping the ante.

benmichael.gifDid you know that Michael Jackson sang an ode to a rat? That's right, Ben was a rat. For those of you too young to remember, Ben was the sequel to Willard, that box office smash about rats. In the first movie, the name in the title refers to the creepy boy. In the sequel, Ben is the leader of a pack of vicious rodents. He is befriended by a lonely boy. Mayhem ensues.

I think I may start casting movies with bloggers. Leader of a pack of vicious rodents. Who could play that? Hmmm..

Anyhow, Michael Jackson sings the title tune for Ben. Can't you picture him all cuddly with the demented, snarling rat?

The song is very poignant. Almost brings a tear to your eye. Really.

Lyrics below, song here.

Ben, the two of us need look no more
We both found what we were looking for
With a friend to call my own
I'll never be alone
And you my friend will see
You've got a friend in me

Ben, you're always running here and there
You feel you're not wanted anywhere
If you ever look behind
And don't like what you find
There's something you should know
You've got a place to go

I used to say
I and me
Now it's us
Now it's we
I used to say
I and me
Now it's us
Now it's we

Ben, most people would turn you away
I don't listen to a word they say
They don't see you as I do
I wish they would try to
I'm sure they'd think again
If they had a friend like Ben
Like Ben
Like Ben

You and Alan deserve something really really bad for reminding me of that song. What's next, you two...BREAD?

If a picture paints a thousand words then why can't I paint you?

(something, something) picture would never show, the you I've come to know....

Back when Mikie looked like an African-American, eh.

"A long, long, time ago........."

Wow, I had no idea the song was about a rat! Maripat must be a huge fan.

For you, Michele, just for you, I moved the pile of New York Times Book Reviews and the photo negatives and the three videotape boxes and there, at the very back of the grape crate that holds my record collection, was this very album, in glorious vinyl.

It wasn't mine, I swear. It was my sister's, but when she was throwing out records I said, "Hey, those'll be valuable some day," and glommed onto about half a dozen. Oh, look, Helen Reddy! I am woman, hear me roar...

Actually, I have a very funny story about my sister and Michael Jackson, but I'm afraid if I post it she'll be googling up my name one day and find the post and then she'll come and kill me.

Oh, look what else is in here! Springsteen!

Eh. Ben. That's nothing. How about Bobby Goldsboro's "Honey" or "Watching Scotty Grow." Now THOSE are evil monsters.

Paul Anka's "Havin' My Baby?" Heh.

DA -- you mean when he looked =human=.

"If you le-heeave me now, you take away the biggest part uv me.... hoooo-oooOOOOoooh, oh, baby please don't go...."

I think I knew there was something wrong with that feller when he wrote a love song to a rat...

That's one of the three songs i can play on the piano - it holds a spot near and dear to my heart :)

You know, somehow it doesn't surprise me. And yes I can totally picture him (and the weird chimp) and a bunch of rats all hanging out together. Yick!

... You guys have no heart ... I my not like Michael, but i love rats. the song is touching and cute and frankly i can identify (w/ the song). My rat is the cutest thing ever and when i hear that song, it brings me close or to tears.
... No heart at all ...

You know what, I agree with you! I think rats are great! Its really great to eat them with a little bit of ketchup and mustard. I often boil them in water after I skin them alive. I like to see them swirm. They are also good deep fried. With a pinch of paprica. MmmMMmMmMm! Rats are great animals. I'd like to hear your recipes on rats. Post me back.
